I worked at German American Chamber of Commerce New York full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-time is flexible and co-workers are often focused and friendly. We received a lot of latitude to create or expand side projects that we thought might enrich client experience, and were given a good amount of autonomy with lots of support for central tasks.

    Cons

Bureaucratic by nature, the GACC has a rigid internal structure and it is difficult to move laterally. Infighting and acting out is often ignored or unresolved, leaving tensions within groups lingering for .... years. Management relies on the goodwill of employees to solve conflicts created by ambiguous professional boundaries and unequal employee investments.

    Advice to Management

Create core policies and procedures and clearly define roles, while leaving room to expand upon them. Management should consider enrolling directors in management and conflict resolution courses.

    Politics
    Job not secure

    Advice to Management

I enjoyed my time at the GACCNY very much until the change of culture. Everybody is frightened they will be fired and you cant use flextime because have to work too many hours. Staffing is being cut and not replaced due to lack of money. Colleagues were very unhappy

    Pros

It is a very good place to work. The network of offices is vast. Travel is limited to occasional trips.

    Cons

The work can be sometimes a bit hectic. Compensation is tied to government rates, which can be unfair at times.

    Advice to Management

Better integration of work across offices could limit competition or redundant activities. Should ideally hire more experienced people from industry.
