I worked at Gersh Agency full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Not as intense as other agencies. Good client base without being one of the top tier. They have a good record of promoting assistants.

    Cons

Run by a family and occasionally decisions can feel capricious. HR is not responsive. Like any agency they expect very long hours.

    Advice to Management

Paying assistants and support staff even slightly better would greatly boost morale and retention. Not a lot of training opportunities for people wishing to move up.

    I worked at Gersh Agency

    Pros

    Working close to shops etc

    Cons

Everyone here was incredibly pompous and terrible. You could feel the misery as you came in to work everyday.

    Advice to Management

Please offer more creative projects to your team. It is understandable that working for an agency demands menial and detailed work but there is absolutely nothing for co-workers to get excited about while working here.

I worked at Gersh Agency full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Learn a lot about the entertainment industry, while making great contacts in the field. Some agents are truly wonderful people who you can learn so much from. Colleagues are young and talented people are trying to make it in the biz. The support from the assistants will get you through the day. Fun Christmas party.

    Cons

Depending on which department, and which agent, (and which location, LA is totally different from NYC, where I worked), being an assistant is a grueling and demanding job; and if you're don't have a thick skin, dedication, and the support from your fellow assistants, you will be eaten alive. Pay is miserable, hours are long, benefits are non-existent, and there are some terrible people that you have to deal with... everyday. They will try and screw you on overtime, and will use you until you break. But hey, what did you think you were getting into?

    Advice to Management

Instead of seeing assistants/floaters as disposable employees and you can replace anytime, try and Cultivate an atmosphere where these young folks can actually grow and appreciate the opportunities given to them. The revolving door has to stop to improve quality of work, and the only way to stop it is to implement better working conditions. A lunch break would be nice, and an actual HR department that cares about... basic rights for workers. Company retreats, actual raises that are based on merit and seniority (not just the qualms of an agent), and just an overall appreciation of the little people that dedicate their youth to this awful, soul sucking machine.

    I worked at Gersh Agency

    Pros

Access to all genres of material. Some limited access to "great" scripts. Very social.

    Cons

High turnover rate. If you want to succeed, you need to dedicate all off-time to research/reading/networking.

    Advice to Management

    Need to improve training structure.

I worked at Gersh Agency full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Comparatively positive atmosphere for a talent agency; generally supportive colleagues; a good place to advance; reputation that, while not at the very top tier, helps enhance ability to bring in clients

    Cons

There is a limit to how far you can progress without jumping to a bigger place; run by a family which can sometimes make decisions feel aribitrary

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to development of young potential agency talent; incentivize people to want to stay there and move up

I worked at Gersh Agency full-time

    Pros

Working environment is relatively calm compared to other agencies; not a lot of screamers here. Hours are also slightly better; agents work 9:30 or 10am til 7:00 or 7:30pm on average. Not a lot of oversight, so you can generally do your own thing. Below-the-line department is strong. Good list of working TV actors.

    Cons

No strong leadership within departments, or at the company as a whole. Literary department suffers from a weak reputation in the industry, and the talent department, while strong in TV, has virtually no presence in film. Pay structure doesn't encourage teamwork. Department not very well-integrated. Management and senior agents don't mentor younger agents; if anything, they compete with them. Every agent is on their... own to bring in clients; senior agents rarely help younger agents sign or bring them onto teams. No packaging business. Agents remain underpaid unless they go out and find job offers elsewhere to use as leverage.

    Advice to Management

Have longterm goals and communicate them to your employees. Think more strategically on behalf of clients; look at packages and bigger-picture deals rather than just the quick buck that comes from immediate bookings. Support and build up your employees by introducing them to executives, send them to festivals/upfronts/Emmys/whatever, bring them on to client teams. Pay salaries and bonuses commensurate with other... agencies. Celebrate the successes; congratulate your employees on a job well done from time to time.

I worked at Gersh Agency full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Small atmoshphere allows for lots of hands on experience

    Cons

One agent there, is one of the most pompous, self-righteous people in New York. One would think this would be the norm for a talent agent, however I have found the opposite in my experience. Agents are usually nice people. It's as if he read some handbook on 'How to act like an Agent'. Its comical how miserable he is.

I have been working at Gersh Agency

    Pros

The Gersh Agency provides a competitive environment for anyone who desires a competitive environment for any individual who desires to be a talent agent.

    Cons

The work atmosphere lacks the synergies that you see in other talent agencies that lead the industry. As a boutique firm, you would expect that.

    Advice to Management

Synergies should be promoted in a competitive environment such as the one provided at the Gersh Agency. It is not promoted here.
