I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Amazing, well known brand - Free Chocolate & sometimes Sundae's! - Great/ fun on-boarding process - Summer hours! Off at 2pm every Friday from Memorial day to labor day! - CEO is awesome, engages conversation with everyone in the company, not just upper management - Coworkers are all positive and fun! - Free fruit/coffee/snacks and always extra food in the kitchen if you forget your lunch - Room... for growth, it is a surprisingly small company and I believe there is a lot of upward mobility & opportunities for growth for the right employees

    Cons

    - Pay is a little lower than surrounding Bay Area jobs/ companies - Not as many company sponsored events as I have had in the past, would love to interact with co-workers outside mt department more often - You have to be your own advocate (and be persistent) for advancement - Not all departments have the same mindset, some may have work/life balance while others may not

I worked at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Brand recognition looks good on your resume to other CPG companies -Most peers are at least somewhat nice and reasonable -Lots of free leftover food, chocolate, and good coffee machines / tea -Being a smaller company, opportunity for more hands-on involvement -Work life balance is great for most

    Cons

-Managers of people have zero leadership skills and are not encouraged to support their employees. If you get a stingy manager, good luck getting any outside perks that cost money approved, regardless of your tenure/enthusiasm/ performance. -Pay is not terrible, but certainly not competitive in the Bay Area, and profit sharing bonus has not been fully paid out in years. Do NOT count that percentage as a guaranteed... part of your salary when assessing overall compensation. -Resource management is poor. Some departments have way too many headcount, others have too few. This makes it hard to get work done. They really need to do a better evaluation of value-added headcount. -Under the thumb of Lindt, which inhibits empowerment and upper level promotion opportunities. -Poor career advancement unless timing is right or you're in a good department. If you have a passive manager, good luck ever moving forward in your career path. -Lack of diversity in Management team. Mostly white men, a white woman or two on occasion. Not a pipeline issue, because if you look at other companies in the Bay Area, they do a better job with representation. -HR does not seem to advocate for the employee and spend a lot of focus on the fluffy stuff like workshops and team building things, which are fun, but won't improve day to day challenges that cause people to want to leave. Feedback from exit interviews does not seem to be taken. And multiple people leaving the same department doesn't seem to raise flags for them to intervene. -High turnover rate, low tenure, low morale.

    Advice to Management

Encourage managers to support their people and lay out SPECIFIC steps needed to be taken in order to move forward in their careers. The Learning Framework is nothing but lipservice. Turnover has become a serious problem and HR pretends like it's no big deal. Address it head on. People face very similar challenges and frustrations every day. Have HR shift their focus from the fluffy fun stuff to real actions... that impact change in the pain points that cause employees to leave the company.

I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Ghirardelli is a great company to work for. The culture is very positive, and there is great emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. The benefits are pretty nice they assist with health care, dental, vision, 401K match, additional amenities include $20 in lunch, work out sessions, work from home options, etc. Onboarding was very comprehensive and well put together.

    Cons

There is a great deal of pressure to deliver on the goals set forth by the company. This can lead to projects with very short timelines that can lead to strain across the cross functional teams. The work life balance can sometimes be a bit skewed towards work. The company overall has very high expectations.

    Advice to Management

More realistic project timelines and expectations for executing them.

I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time

    Pros

Work/life balance is really good. Employees are treated well; the culture is very positive. The brand is amazing! The on-boarding process was top notch. The company wants to see employees succeed and there is a good recognition program.

    Cons

Being so small, the company is extremely hierarchical. The leadership team needs training on how to manage and grow employees. There is absolutely no focus on personal development or career pathing. Remote employees can feel disconnected at times.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees and trust that they will do a good job...this will free up time for the leadership team to work on growing and retaining their employees.

I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Company is moving is great direction. Management is supportive of team who wants to move up in company. Great culture within company.

    Cons

Work life balance is almost non-existent. Management can sometimes be hypocritical and forgetful. There are a lot of growing pains, as the company grows into a much larger profitable corporation you cannot forget the team who got you there. Compensation doesn't reflect increasing company sales or work performance. Turnover of chocolateers and supervisors is high.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your lower management in retail store. Recruitment needs help to get people to work for the company in some of the stores outside of San Francisco. Turnover wouldn't be so high if compensation was at fair market value, it is not. Also corporate people need to have a field day in retail stores to have an idea of how the store dynamic works before they make heavy decisions in store.

I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time

    Pros

The company is filled with passionate, talented people who take pride in their work. Everyone I have encountered with has great work experience and is well-qualified for their job. I have the best work/life balance I've ever had in my career.

    Cons

While the company is headquartered in the Bay Area, the culture and benefits are not at all in line with a state of the art tech company that you typically find in the Bay Area. Personally, I don't find this to be discouraging, but I think it can catch new employees of guard at first.

    Advice to Management

At times the day-to-day operations can feel a bit too formal. We are essentially selling happiness to consumers worldwide. Let's not take ourselves too serious and celebrate the fun that comes with manufacturing and selling great tasting chocolate!

I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

FREE chocolate, supportive environment, plenty of room to grow in the company, large, stable company, plenty of divisions for a variety of jobs/experiences. Great family/work life balance. Wonderful support from upper management and everyone pitches in to help when needed. Opportunity to travel if you wanted to. Above average pay for job description.

    Cons

Centrically focused - sites that are further out do not always get as much notice as needed to incorporate new procedures. Behind the times technology wise, a lot of manual work done that could be automated

    Advice to Management

Updating technology would help improve efficiency and morale.

I have been working at Ghirardelli Chocolate

    Pros

Great work life balance. Pay is competitive. Lots of amazing perks, including lots of chocolate. Its like a family there. Very family oriented.

    Cons

It can be extremely stressful and busy at times. During the busy season, longer hours are required. Company growth is slow.

    Advice to Management

In some positions, there is literally a revolving door.Positions are constantly being filled and then employees being let go multiple times. While there are some temps that have proved their hard work and loyalty. My advice is to look at why this is happening.
