I have been working at Giant Cement

    Pros

It's a fairly stable job with a growing market. Benefits are good.

    Cons

The union makes it impossible to get anything accomplished. The management doesnt invest in its employees nor do they care that we are losing great employees to the competition across the street. The company offers ZERO bonus to employees and NO 'cost of living' raises to salaried employees while both competitors around us do. This effectively gives zero incentive to employees to stay on.

I worked at Giant Cement full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There are many opportunities to contribute to company's success. Most of the people are hard working and want the company to succeed

    Cons

Difficult to achieve high performance with the union work force. Most of work for is over saturated with too many projects and cannot focus on the core aspects of their jobs.

I have been working at Giant Cement full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

A manufacturing job that pays well with benefits in an area that does not have a lot of mfg opportunities. Front line and mid-level managers generally work well as a team and care for the workers.

    Cons

Company and plant upper management changed yearly, resulting in a constant change in priorities. This resulted in poor communication to the front line workers and a general sense that there was not a consistent vision as to how the business unit should be run. Front line workers are shift work, which is a lifestyle challenge, especially for those with young families.

I have been working at Giant Cement full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Most of the people are very good to work with. They are friendly and hard-working and want to do the right thing.

    Cons

In 2013 the CEO closed the corporate office in Summerville, South Carolina and moved it to Alexandria, Virginia so it was closer to where he lived. In the process many good people left including most of the accounting dept. and others were displaced. The parent company in Spain has also been taking more direct control of Giant and the results have not been good. The previous review is also false. The current CEO Mr. LLontop has only been with the company since 2012 and was hired directly from the outside. The previous two or three CEOs have only been here about three years each. If any of them previously served as CFO I am not aware of it and it was well before the review posting of Sep 17 2012 and they are no longer current employees. The review is false on that basis alone. The comments about the Spanish team being "excellent" and "a pleasure to work with" are also suspect. I don't think many of us would agree.

I have been working at Giant Cement full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Giant Cement has been in business since the late 1800's. The company is currently owned by Cementos Portland of Madrid, Spain. I worked as CFO prior to the acquisition by Cementos Portland and CEO after the acquisition. The Spanish management team members of Cementos Portland were excellent to work for. All of the Spanish employees brought over to assist in the operations were a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

The company is experiencing a difficult time currently due to the economic downtown in housing, real estate and reduced government spending on infrastructure. It is hard to say how long this will continue and what impact it will have on employment opportunities at Giant Cement.

  10. "Director of Eastern Canada"

Director of Eastern in Rosemère, QC

I worked at Giant Cement for more than a year

    Pros

great company to work for. all I have to say is that they treated they're people good when I was there

    Cons

they decided to close the Canadian operations and not have the competition do the same to them in the USA.
