I have been working at Giant Eagle part-time

    Pros

Overall great coworkers, management isn't bad. Environment is fairly lighthearted. I've had a great time getting to know the people I work with, along with getting to know other people in the surrounding departments, and the team and the store employees overall are fairly tight-knit. I've even gotten to know the employees that work at the Huntington bank within the store.
They give their part-time workers insurance after 1 year of employment.
It's been a great starting job to learn and get experience from.
I've learned how to grow as a person and learned how to be a better employee, and I've learned what it means to go the extra mile for someone. You really get to know the regular customers, and the regulars get to know you, and they'll really care. Some of them will even specifically make sure they go through your line, because you've ended up becoming their favorite. It really helps outweigh the cons that I've ran into, which is not a short list.

    Cons

They don't pay much, and they never schedule enough cashiers to compensate for busier moments of the day. I work late morning to early evening shift, and by the time 4 pm hits, the customer to cashier ratio is very disproportionate. They can be a bit stingy when it comes to holidays. They'll cut hours right before a holiday, so when you get holiday pay it doesn't make much of a difference. The position that you get is the position you'll likely stay in. Promotion is few and far between. They'll schedule you like a full-time person without giving you full-time benefits, and there's very little difference in pay in full-time.
There are certain rules they have in the store that I'd consider petty, and trying to remember all the rules and things you have to do throughout the day can be aggravating. I'm not afraid of hard work, and I even welcome challenging and hard work. But there comes a point where certain rules that have very little to do with how you execute your job or presenting yourself in a professional manner become just another thing to stress about.
