I worked at Giant Food Stores part-time

    Pros

They start you off at at least $9 an hour and are very flexible when it comes to being in school. If you stay longer than two years you get paid holidays and vacation no matter how little you work.

    Cons

Hard to advance, look for moving across departments

I worked at Giant Food Stores part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pros used to be they reward hard work and people who want to work will get more hours over people who don't want to work. But that's changed.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy. They cut hours like it's all a big game to them when it's their employees' livelihood they're screwing with. They expect you to come in early and work late and work in 2 and 3 departments in a shift but make sure your original department is kept up. Lots of managers close to retirement collecting a paycheck so they run employees all over the place and they are nasty and backstabbing all so they can keep their jobs. The young managers they bring up don't care about customer service or ordering enough product. They think their job will always be there but if anyone has been to Giant lately, there's never any customers.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your part-time help better. Many of them want 40 hours a week. These people don't feel entitled like many of your permanent full time employees. They work late when asked. They come in early when asked. They work extra shifts to cover for all the sick and unreliable and undependable people you hire so you can cut hours. They are team players who work in other departments. People like us keep a store going and deserve more respect. Also your older managers need to be weeded out. Too many people collecting a paycheck making changes just to justify their job. Younger managers need to be shown that their job isn't a given. Stop trying to customer volume back so you can keep your number of employees down because it's backfiring. The customers are leaving and going to the other 10 grocery stores that are within a 5 mile radius. Start playing smart and playing to win.

I worked at Giant Food Stores part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The only pro is the associates. I would not have been there that long if they weren't there. Insurance is ok

    Cons

To many programs. They think it's all good for the customers like 4th in line. The company doesn't realize the stress level the employees are under. Cutting part time employees that have insurance down to 26 hours so no more insurance for them. Stay away!!!!! It's really sad when managers are leaving left and right. What happened to the motto when you treat your employees right they will treat the customers right.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees right. All of the really good employees that would be moving up are moving out. Start caring more.

I worked at Giant Food Stores full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the people were great to work with. Some supervisors were willing to help me with issues and concerns.

    Cons

Screwed in pay. Refused to send me help. Communication terrible. Overlooked for management and promoted less experienced people. Overall not good.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your employees better and they may stay and/or put more effort into their jobs. Stop cutting labor. Stop refusing to send help.

I have been working at Giant Food Stores part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly co-workers. Regular Custumers are great to deal with.

    Cons

Management is pretty bad. Hardly any communication.

    Advice to Management

Start communicating with your employees!!!! If someone calls off, tell the department! And get more full time positions. You drive away workers by keeping them at part time
