I have been working at Giant Tiger full-time

    Pros

Some staff are fantastic and know what it is to put in a sold days work. Other staff fell that there job is safe and do the minimum they can because they know how difficult it is for an employer to fire them.

    Cons

The over all corporate structure needs to be looked at. Different rates of pay. Bonuses. how many hours are aloud for staff. And how many employees are to be hired or how many for each department are way to different from store to store. These things need to be addressed and need to be a lot more simular between all stores. Also owners/operators should have more control over the products they are selling in there stores. There is to much corporate interference forcing stores to sell what they tell them to.

    Advice to Management

This is not about management considering they are told what they can and can't do by owners which are told by corporate headquarters what the can and can't do. Head office needs to give control back to the store owners/operators.

I have been working at Giant Tiger full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working for Giant Tiger has always been a great pleasure. I've been in love with this business since the day I started, 11 years ago. They are greatly involved with helping communities with fundraisers and events. Employees get great advantages like employee discounts on store merchandise. Once you get your foot in with Giant Tiger, I highly recommend staying put. They are like a big family and every person counts no matter the title. Career opportunities are also available with Giant Tiger and a career worth looking into!

    Cons

    I personally have no cons.

I have been working at Giant Tiger full-time

    Pros

3 week vacation and 5 personal days from the get go, but it stays that way for 10 years...

    Cons

you need to work there 10 years to get an extra vacation week

little to no room for growth, depending on which department you work for

mostly older women, so lots of backstabbing, gossip, negativity, favoritism

you have to be a part-time receptionist (replace the receptionist on her breaks) and they only tell you after you start working, not indicated on your contract

depending on who your director is, you cannot vacation for more than 1 week at a time

long work weeks, 8-5 to service store owners , start early and finish late

the VP is also very catty (he's a man), shows favoritism towards certain managers, hence the better quality of life for certain employees depending on who they work for , makes inappropriate remarks to employees, never acknowledges associates, only management. will introduce new management members to management only, skips all associates even though he passes in front of them.

never get raises, even when well deserved, they always have an excuse of low budget and nonsense restrictions. But new 6 figure salary management team members keep appearing every other month and new accessories are bought for the office on a weekly basis

I could go on for weeks about the cons

    Advice to Management

remember that you also started at the bottom and that you wished you were treated fairly when that was the case. Treat the associates like you would management, we are all equal and all work very hard but with very different revenue.
If you need to fight for your associates to get the treatment and salary that they deserve, please do so, remember that you wished someone would have done the same for you.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Great staff as well as good opportunity to learn details of cost, profit scenario Real opportunity to build your business

    Cons

Some concerns regarding issues not addressed in a timely manner. Management style becoming more corporately driven. Same with merchandising direction

    Advice to Management

Straying from the entrepreneurial beginnings that made you successful

    Pros

3weeks of vacation; benefits are good.

    Cons

Low salary; longer working hours than the general's outside; leader not competent both in professional experience and academic background. can not learn real things.

I have been working at Giant Tiger part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -flexible hours
    -laid back nice co-workers
-my location is busy so there's lots of work to do so time goes pretty quick
    -not stressful at all
    -cool customers are cool

    Cons

    -retail can be boring
    -grumpy customers can be annoying
-hours are all over the place
-my location can get extremely busy during the summer and the job can be a little stressful working around so many people

    Advice to Management

Do you help your employees understand what they need to do?
Do you set them goals? Give feedback on performance? Provide regular opportunities to speak one to one? How else do you communicate with them?
These are all things that every manager should work on. Sometimes they could give a little more feedback or criticism on work habits to try and be more efficient.

I worked at Giant Tiger full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay was marginally better than other places.

    Cons

The worst management I have ever worked for. Unbearable being berated and harassed on an almost daily basis. High staff turnover because of this. The products sold in store is all junk. Embarrassing ad campaigns on t.v.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the fear based corporate culture.
