I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great mission, impactful for many girls in Utah

    Cons

The salaries are not ideal, but that’s not a surprise ( it is a non profit) The surprise was the incredibly toxic environment. The top management constantly asked for input on improving the culture but always came to the conclusion that there was nothing they could do to make anyone happier. Employees wanted autonomy both in terms of their work (ie. no micromanaging, which was everywhere!) and flexible work schedules....

    Advice to Management

Give your employees fair wages and autonomy!

I have been working at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great mission. Flexible.

    Cons

High turn over with little room for promotion or growth.

    Advice to Management

I would advise supporting and encouraging council staff more fully. Employees are attracted to the mission but feel that the mission is not always supported. Disconnect between national and regional councils can be overwhelming.

    Pros

Free reign of your position and opportunity for creativity Work hours are semi-flexible Great mission

    Cons

Limited direction but high expectations Very limited work/life balance Many nights, weekends, and unpaid overtime Large disconnect between upper management and lower management Much resistance from leaders due to high turn over and constant state of change. Constant work environment of urgency Little to no opportunity for professional growth and advancement

    Advice to Management

Leadership is not a position but a state of mind. When you have councils fairly small number of employees, large decisions should be discussed and decided on as a whole. This would empower those who have to carry out your decisions to have pride in completing them.

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The organization has an overall great mission. The amount of opportunities available to girls in the Girl Scout program is exceptional. It is satisfying to witness the growth of so many girls in the program over time.

    Cons

It is a non-profit, thus salaries are ridiculously uncompetitive. Raises are a joke, if you even are lucky to get one. Management seems to only care about one thing - that is that everyone works like slaves with zero appreciation.

I have been working at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great mission and a lot of really dedicated people - who can argue with girls' leadership? Really good benefits, lots of vacation (25 days/year for exempt staff) Definitely trying to improve the organization and make it more appealing for younger staff.

    Cons

Many departments seem to be completely disorganized with an overall lack of strategic direction. Poor money management and planning. Negative culture of distrust and power grabbing by senior leadership.

    Advice to Management

Value your younger employees and welcome ideas, even when it's not "what we've always done."
