I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time

      Pros

You can genuinely make a difference in the lives of these girls. It's the most fun summer you'll ever have and there are times that it feels like you're hardly working.

      Cons

Administration tends to ignore what the average counselor experiences in a week. Some of the all-camp activities can feel like hazing and the admin staff tend to get very cliquey.

      Advice to Management

Make admin training at the same time as general training or after it, but by doing it before, a clique is already formed which leads to a severe discontinuity among the camp. It's important to remember the position of the counselors.

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Get to make a difference in the lives of girls, a lot of variety

      Cons

Driven by money and not by mission, toxic work environment, lack of work-life balance

      Advice to Management

Be more mission focused. Serving more girls is great because it means more girls are having their lives changed. But hounding employees to meet arbitrary goals only to bring in more money is terrible.

      Pros

This organization is a great place to work for flexible work environment and the family atmosphere. Not to mention you are making a difference.

      Cons

The money salaries leave you needing a second job or second income in the house. There is not a lot of opportunity for advancement.

I have been working at Girl Scouts USA full-time

      Pros

Making a difference in even one girl's life feels amazing

      Cons

If you're not Caucasian then you won't succeed here. Very racist upper management.

      Advice to Management

Stop hiring people that look like you. Hire diversity based on talent but because you know someone is a work horse or a sycophant.

I have been working at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

I feel like I make a difference in the lives of girls at camp. I travel a lot and get to meet lots of cool people. Autonomy.

      Cons

All-women environment, gets catty quickly. Constantly fighting lack of resources. Poor work/life balance. Pay is unfair, considering volume of work being asked of employees.

      Advice to Management

Trust is a two-way street. Provide actual on-boarding with specific skills training for various departments.

      Pros

Mission-driven work. Girl Scouts is an amazing organization to work for because you know that you are making a difference with the work that you are doing every day. Decent salary.

      Cons

Lack of work/life balance They don't care about their employees as people Management does not have clear direction/goals but expect task-driven work from their staff without giving them a vision to work towards

      Advice to Management

Care about your employees. Be honest during interviews about your priorities. Live the Girl Scout Promise & Law within your council so that the girls can feel it as well.

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Great benefits, great team, superb managers and training, amazing organization, a lot of room to grow and make a difference in the community, very proud to have been with this nonprofit organization.

      Cons

Hard job at times, a lot to manage and there never seemed like enough time in the day. It was hard to keep a good work life balance. I loved the job but it wore me out during busy seasons. As a regional staff member, working away from the main team also made the job a little lonely sometimes.

      Advice to Management

Add more support or part time staff or divide roles so that more coverage can be completed across the territory (specially during busy times). Try to have an intern for the area. Also increased staff support in rural area would help volunteers (this was already common but still super important).

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time

      Pros

Lots of fluffy feel good moments, like "cultural values" and living the Girl Scout Law. If you get to interact with the volunteers, every now and then there is a moment of hope that you might be making a difference.

      Cons

No work life balance, no room for growth, strangled communications channels leave workers wondering why something is being changed. Senior staff out of touch with the demands of field staff work. Goals are often unachievable, making the job frustrating and unfulfilling to staff. Instead of a team effort, there's often a feeling a competition between departments for numbers and/or acknowledgement. There is an intensity...

      Advice to Management

Clear the communications channels, find some regularity, and figure out how to keep staff for more than 1-2 years so the communities can grow.
