I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Great benefits including health insurance, PTO and flexibility.

    Cons

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri -Those at the executive level do not understand the day to day operations of those working in the field. Expectations are unrealistic. Those working with volunteers day in and day out are not heard regarding practices of what’s working and not. Any “pause points” had are done by a questionnaire already determined. The proper questions are not asked therefore it’s like a hamster wheel. The...

    Advice to Management

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri -Upper management needs to spend a few days (weeks) with those working with the volunteers. Shadow them to really get an understanding of what they are doing Day in and day out. Spend time with everyone working directly with programs, from volunteers, to portions, community outreach and customer service. This way informed and educated decisions can be made for everyone.

I have been working at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Free reign of your position and opportunity for creativity Work hours are semi-flexible Great mission

    Cons

Limited direction but high expectations Very limited work/life balance Many nights, weekends, and unpaid overtime Large disconnect between upper management and lower management Much resistance from leaders due to high turn over and constant state of change. Constant work environment of urgency Little to no opportunity for professional growth and advancement

    Advice to Management

Leadership is not a position but a state of mind. When you have councils fairly small number of employees, large decisions should be discussed and decided on as a whole. This would empower those who have to carry out your decisions to have pride in completing them.

Former Employee - Membership Manager in Boise, ID

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

People on the ground level work very hard and produce results while supporting each other,

    Cons

Upper management is out of touch with what is happening with membership and volunteers overall - they do not trust the employees who work with membership directly enough. Also, as with most non-profits, they cannot afford, nor do they make a priority, to support employees as much as they should.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Do the jobs of your "lowest" employees. Not for an hour but a full week. Also look at all the facts before you point your finger to blame someone.

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

The only pros were getting to meet volunteers and girls.

    Cons

Upper management so far out of touch with life outside of their golden towers. Unrealistic, unattainable, impossible unreachable goals set by people who have clue what they are doing! Not EVERY girl wants to be a GS, in fact, less and less of them want to – You people have turned a beloved tradition into a nightmare for your field staff and your volunteers. As field staff...

I worked at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Ability to work from home, if needed, work with some great volunteers and a public that is supportive, the smiles on girls faces when they are given the chance to thrive

    Cons

Constant push for cookies sales and Fall Product sales without regard to volunteer and girl time spent. Lack of money for volunteers to provide adequate girl opportunities because funding is spent more on trying to impress the elite than on girl memberships and activities. Upper management cares only about numbers and winning recognition from GSUSA corporate. Major complaints...

I have been working at Girl Scouts USA full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Fellow employees, the girls, what girl scouts is meant to be

    Cons

Dont even bother applying here unless you have a parent in upper management. It seems that children of upper management keep advancing despite their lack of experience taking these jobs from more qualified applicants.

    Advice to Management

Please check the hiring methodologies your organization is using. Very unethical practices where you dont advance unless you are related to someone important there.

    Pros

Making a difference in even one girl's life feels amazing

    Cons

If you're not Caucasian then you won't succeed here. Very racist upper management.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring people that look like you. Hire diversity based on talent but because you know someone is a work horse or a sycophant.
