I have been working at Gladstone Institutes full-time

    Pros

Collaborative, cutting-edge research in a supportive environment. Great benefits.

    Cons

Still rely on heavy grant writing to support salaries. High indirects. Unclear paths/little opportunity for career advancement.

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes full-time

    Pros

Lots of smart colleagues, great benefits, interesting talks and events for scientists to learn new techniques and meet more scientists, many instruments and cores in the institution, decent time off, UCSF campus doesn't have the best food.

    Cons

There are not a lot of cons, but the low pay stands out the most. San Francisco is trrribly expensive. They will make you pay $280/month for parking. No where to move up without PhD.

I worked at Gladstone Institutes full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nice colleagues, nice location, great benefits and perks. Most seniority were pretty friendly and welcoming.

    Cons

Personally would have liked to interact with the President more. Also personally would have like to have had a supervisor who wasn't busy all the time to where they don't have time for new employees.

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company has really smart people doing great science. It's a small, but growing, organization, so it feels like family. They offer great benefits, especially for a non-profit organization.

    Cons

The leadership is very hierarchical, and there is a huge lack of transparency. The president doesn't know how to lead the organization, especially the administration. Employees don't feel valued, and there is no room to move up in the company.

I worked at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Science here is fantastic because everyone is so open to collaboration. The science is high caliber! Also, there are lots of resources, support for grant writing and submission, & great benefits. Also, the Gladstone has a very active Postdoc Advisory Group that organizes seminars for career development and professional skills like networking and presentation skills. Really makes the entire training well rounded.

    Cons

Facilities support can be unresponsive at times. When equipment needed to be fixed or replaced, they would either show up without announcement, or take a very long time to respond. The facilities people themselves are generally helpful and friendly. Mix of very old and very new equipment. Overall, mild complaints though.

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Opportunities for educational development. Flexible work time. Great work life balance and great benefits. Opportunity to attend scientific talks and conferences weekly .

    Cons

Management should encourage more involvement of Research Associates in scientific part of projects rather than just be involved in technical part.
