I worked at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great science. Interesting seminars. Great core facilities and building in general. Nice people. Have access to UCSF's excellent career center.

    Cons

Lacks the flexibility of academia and the pay of industry. The upper level management appear to be receptive to change, but change takes a minimum of 6 months to a year- this bureaucratic set up hinders progress. Benefits are minimal, but are touted as excellent. Many "benefits"/policies are the minimum required by CA law. Postdocs are still called "trainees" but are the work horses of Gladstone. Postdocs are told that there is only room for minimal salary increases, but all PIs seem to be hiring, therefore, there is clearly extra money around. In general, there is no personal reward for fellowships. Most people have very long commutes or spend over $3k/month on rent. Postdocs need to be aware that they will neither be able to support their families, or save any money, during their tenure at Gladstone.

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes for less than a year

    Pros

It is a very good place for postdocs. Gladstone provide excellent scientific training and generous benefit for postdocs. In addition, Gladstone provides awesome working environment and scientific atmosphere.

    Cons

Although the salary for postdocs is higher than that of postdocs working at UCSF. It is still hard to afford to live in San Francisco, especially for people have little kids.

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes for more than 3 years

    Pros

Scientists at Gladstone are brilliant and passionate about their research. The environment is extremely collaborative. There is a huge emphasis on mentorship and carrier development and many resources are available to the employees to advance their carriers.

    Cons

Just like any other academic position, postdocs and scientist are paid below average for their level of education and training.

  7. "Supportive and dynamic scientific environment"

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent support and facilities for scientists, including editorial and graphic design services and state-of-the-art core facilities (stem cell, animal, imaging, etc). Many events and seminars emphasizing not only scholarship but also topics like diversity and career development. Great location in a sunny part of San Francisco.

    Cons

There are few female PIs, especially in leadership roles. Cost of living is very high in San Francisco, especially considering that graduate students and postdocs are trainees so get low pay!

I worked at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Science here is fantastic because everyone is so open to collaboration. The science is high caliber! Also, there are lots of resources, support for grant writing and submission, & great benefits. Also, the Gladstone has a very active Postdoc Advisory Group that organizes seminars for career development and professional skills like networking and presentation skills. Really makes the entire training well rounded.

    Cons

Facilities support can be unresponsive at times. When equipment needed to be fixed or replaced, they would either show up without announcement, or take a very long time to respond. The facilities people themselves are generally helpful and friendly. Mix of very old and very new equipment. Overall, mild complaints though.

I have been working at Gladstone Institutes full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I started my Gladstone life as a postdoc trainee. There are many training programs to improve your capability for your next-step career, for both academic and industrial directions. Many training programs are free for Gladstone trainees. Gladstone also has very good scientific environment to inspire you and good research cores to support your projects. Salary is also a little higher than university.

    Cons

San Francisco has very good whether, but research pressure keep you in the lab most of time, although it totally depends on what you really pursue for your career.
