I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

Lot of great science happening at this company if you can get onto the right team. There are a lot of opportunities.

    Cons

This is a very large company and works as a bureaucracy. Salary ranges and bonuses are set and not very negotiable.

    Advice to Management

The R&D organization is too fractured for information and best practices to flow seamlessly between departments - or even within departments on different sites.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

Branching into a number of different areas of research at the moment with some opportunities being created here. Pay and benefits comparable to others within the sector. The pipeline and product replacement is probably the best in the industry right now and GSK will probably be the largest pharma within a few years. Expansion across the globe means opportunity overseas could be available.

    Cons

The company continually changes its targets (which is in itself good) but never allows enough time for them to be met. Shareholders mean everything to GSK now and staff are just an unavoidable expense. If you want to work for GSK, ensure as good a pay deal and as high a grade as humanely possible because your chances of progress within this organisation are very limited. They would rather buy in skills than... develp staff. There is a huge amount of 'restructuring' at this company which will likely continue for the foreseeable future, making staff morale quite low.

    Advice to Management

Learn to value your staff again. The Glaxo and Wellcome heritage companies valued their staff and were two of themost respected and successfull companies in the world. Focus more on getting 'new' drugs and vaccines out there, rather than the recent 'copy cat' stuff of the last few years. From an ethical point of view, most of your scientists would like to make drugs which cover previously unmet needs.
