I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Your experience at GSK will completely depend on which department you work for. Some departments only work 7hrs, others have the expectation of working longer and weekends if needed, and others have shifts. Some departments get a lot of funding so you get to go to multiple conferences, and some barely get funding so no travel. Also, some departments heavily push career development and others are the exact opposite. Finally,...

    Cons

Great when it's great, but the bad can get really frustrating... Also the people who have worked at GSK for like ever never want to be innovate, which holds everyone else back

    Advice to Management

Standardize the culture! Uphold managers, directors and VPs to a higher level accountability and review.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay, flexibility, benefits, closed between Christmas and New Years Day! Contemporary facilities and great science.

    Cons

Very large company. Can feel too big at times. Employee parking is not great. Long walk from the parking lot to the entrance.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Nice modern lab and work space.

    Cons

Analytical technology is behind the times. Internally developed systems and software are not intuitive and waste a lot of time. Senior scientists are treated like pairs of hands.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Global reach, diverse, true focus on helping patients

    Cons

Red tape, lack of career development

    Advice to Management

Focus more on employees who want to stretch and try new things instead of always hiring from the outsider people who look good on paper but don’t have company-specific knowledge.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Intent to seek new opportunities for growing the business. Promotion options seem to be available.

    Cons

No concerted way of making well informed decisions. Mistrust of analytic solutions. Very near term focused; very risk averse. Promotions based on relationships vs skills or merit. Very UK centric. Most of the progressive thinkers in R&D have left due to frustration.

    Advice to Management

    Clean up management decision making.

    I worked at GlaxoSmithKline

    Pros

One of the biggest pros is flexibility, dependent upon your business unit. Also most of the people you work with are friendly and helpful. Pay is good - as long as you aren't comparing it to other Pharma's. As GSK is a UK company, we do get the week between Christmas and New Year's as shutdown. The appointment of internal candidate, Emma Walmsley as CEO, appears to be a positive step for GSK's future.

    Cons

Once an admin - always an admin. There is very little room for growth, and although the company has a lot of development options, it does not trickle down to the support staff. Promises are made that managers will help you find more challenging roles, however they move on before anything happens. The company line is Work/Life Balance, however in the R&D environment many people cannot use their vacation days because...

    Advice to Management

Survey the true pulse of the employee instead of providing guided surveys providing you with a small window for the information you want. Remember that the support staff is what helps you get to your goals (personal and corporate). Seriously provide growth opportunities for those at the bottom of the corporate ladder. Not every admin wants to remain an admin, even if it is for the upper level of management. And mostly...
