I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working in IT, I had the pleasure to work with a lot of knowledgeable people from whom I learned a lot. The clients whom I supported were also top-notch scientists who were glad to have our help. Great benefits, pay was very good, local management/team leads were very good and always had team personnel's best interests at heart.

    Cons

Upper (corporate) management seemed to change direction too often. It seemed as if the moment we were comfortable performing work with certain tools, processes and infrastructure in place, senior management would change things up. Also, numerous reorganizations cost a lot of people their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Find the best way to do things and stick with it! Stop trying to be all things to all people and embracing the latest fads

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is provision for Flexitime. The company has Good products and Good business practices compared to competitors. A lot of processes are taught through online learning and IT support is robust.

    Cons

Micromanagement, too much change, little tolerance for the new, little diversity. Non competitive pay

    Advice to Management

Lead from the front, don't take credit on behalf of your staff. Stop micromanaging. Intervene on behalf of your team when expectations of them from above country or the GM are unrealistic

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline (More than a year)

    Pros

World class environment within the Pharmaceutical industry. Lots of growth opportunities for lateral movement. Work life balance good. Working from home a bonus depending on manager. Great benefits and bonus program. Shutdown over the holidays a plus. Competitive salary based on role title. Solid work environment, mostly up on current technology, and good technical infrastructure. Lots of opportunities to take on new work and projects.

    Cons

Simplification of roles and movement to low cost resources in other countries (i.e. Poland, India) has become the norm. Lack of opportunity for advancement. Unrealistic yearly objectives based on continually changing priorities, and lack of resources, limit ability to attain better than average annual reviews for better pay and advancement. Short life span for employees that have been with the company over 10 years even though they have deep subject matter expertise.

    Advice to Management

At some point the simplification cost savings initiatives will impact your ability to effectively support internal and external customers. Business and process knowledge will be impacted as more subject matter experts leave or are let go. Management may want to consider working on ways to retain it's loyal and highly productive assets by providing realistic career advancement opportunities with the appropriate compensation. I've seen multiple individuals assigned to management roles without receiving grade level advancement or pay increase. It doesn't say much for how management values it's employees if they are not compensated fairly.

    Pros

    Great company to work with.

    Cons

Being a developer in an open office environment along mid-management can be a bit of a challenge. Developing websites can be a bit of a challenge in an extremely chatty environment.

    Advice to Management

Developers need to be put in rooms, with headphones with their music of choice and free of distraction.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, diverse set of responsibilities in your roles, great mission to help people feel better and live longer.

    Cons

Company's focus is on emerging markets and is taking resources from US to address this focus. Senior management is inexperienced. There is a bias against older workers with a feeling that energy is an exclusive of youth. Working smart counts for less.

    Advice to Management

Feed the US "cash cow" again. Promote people based on their accomplishments and experiences and not just their "potential."
