I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Supportive environment in which personal development and work preferences were honored. Investment was made in cutting edge science and productive collaborations with academic experts were supported.

    Cons

The pharmaceutical industry changes rapidly. Job security is always a background concern. One must be able to deal with a certain amount of uncertainty that comes with re-organizations, mergers and acquisitions, and radical changes of fortune.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Your experience at GSK will completely depend on which department you work for. Some departments only work 7hrs, others have the expectation of working longer and weekends if needed, and others have shifts. Some departments get a lot of funding so you get to go to multiple conferences, and some barely get funding so no travel. Also, some departments heavily push career development and others are the exact opposite.... Finally, some departments tolerate poor leadership and some have little tolerance for bad leaders and management... So if you interview here, ask what the work hours, work/life balance, and career development opportunities are like. Ask about the culture! I've seen combinations of everything. Also, lots of reorg has been going on, leaving a lot of people a bit stressed.

    Cons

Great when it's great, but the bad can get really frustrating... Also the people who have worked at GSK for like ever never want to be innovate, which holds everyone else back

    Advice to Management

Standardize the culture! Uphold managers, directors and VPs to a higher level accountability and review.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible with start/end times, decent pay, overall good experience. Plenty of equipment for tests that need to be done. Plenty of work to do, but usually not too much work to the point of stress. Most people are very helpful towards others. The company places a very high standard when it comes to data integrity in the laboratory.

    Cons

No paid vacation, no raises, no bonuses. Some people with some time at the company were always cranky and love to complain.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Excellent coworkers, on top of science, learned a lot, a lot was expected.

    Cons

Company doesn't allow research to do the job. Top management does not understand that you have to be willing to take a risk if you want to be in research and actually succeed.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

When the organization commits to something, they commit. If your projects become priorities, there will be support and desire for results. You will be surrounded by talented coworkers and the means to achieve your goals. When times are good the company will commit to developing the skills of the team.

    Cons

There will be initiatives that are driven by people you have not met, and have not engaged with you honestly. They will be filtered down the management chain in a game of telephone where messages can be mixed. Many of these initiatives are harmless, well-intended and a few are useful. Some are layevoffs/reorgs with an uncomfortable amount of positive spin. Patience and serenity are required.

    Advice to Management

Less is more. Changes will always be required, but do not rush into change for change sake. This underminds urgent efforts down the road. Be direct with your employees, they can take bad news and in my experience were able to innovate and invent around technical issues.
