    Positive Outlook

I worked at Glide (US) (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Helping the Community and the People.

    Cons

There is No downside. I've learned so much and was able to work with a Foundation whom I love for what they do and was very bless to grow within the job as well as with the People of the Community.

    Advice to Management

    Very Organized, Good communication skills,
I've been trained for Domestic Violence, De-escalations, AED/CPR, N.E.R.T., and most of all, how to manage the many different employees that were on my Security Team.

    Pros

Glide is a neighborhood cornerstone that serves the Tenderloin's people. If you can look past the worn streets, you'll find radically inclusive community.

    Cons

Financial incentives do not inspire sustainable living. A large portion of the clients are complacent and become dependent on subsidies.

    Advice to Management

Give your front line employees raises. An experience employee can keep morale high and deescalate situation better. You lose a lot of productivity on turn over

I worked at Glide (US) as an intern

    Pros

Working with GLIDE's NCM team I learned how to multitask and how to utilize different healthcare applications like Centricity and LCR.

    Cons

After changing ownership to HealthRight360, there was more micromanaging.

    Advice to Management

Do not micromanage the NCM team. Go ahead a oversee them but not in a way where they feel they are being monitored every second they are at work.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Glide (US) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Incredibly friendly and diverse staff. Even the upper level management people are interesting and passionate and will smile at you in the halls. So many programs (80+) and departments, always room for moving up. The most upfront and jarring experience with direct social services that I've had. Well structured departments and strong mentoring. Very decent pay and healthy office culture for the non-profit world.

    Cons

The neighborhood is wild, no surprises there. The environment, both on the streets and inside, is riddled with drugs/alcohol/mental illness and makes it a very unpredictable work environment. You need to be tough and confident.

    Pros

A great place to volunteer at but not to work for. Diverse staff. A nice get-together for all new staff members (called "The Cultural Journey"). Free holiday giveaways. Feeds the homeless. Relaxed culture (tattoos? piercings? sweatpants? super short denim skirt? sure, that's all fine). Variety of programs offered.

    Cons

Very disorganized. Chaotic. Stressful. Lack of communication. Questionable ethics. (For example: Instead of paying you for overtime, they will simply tell you to take an extra hour or two for your unpaid lunch.) Turnover is super high because the environment is incredibly toxic and negative. Located in a bad neighborhood. Low pay and benefits for how hard you'll have to work. ALWAYS short-staffed - one person doing a job meant for 2 or 3.

I worked at Glide (US) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

working closely with families and the diversity of the organization! I loved Glide and felt that I learned and grew so much as a person.

    Cons

Some of the employees at Glide may not have the true passion of working with people or truly care about their work.

    Advice to Management

Loved my managers! They were very positive and supportive and really cared about their staff!

I worked at Glide (US) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great staff; excellent mission; compassionate approach to working with participants; programs address significant needs with love and empathy; there is an organization-wide commitment to shared values of love and respect. There is a deep and sincere sense of community among staff. The organization has a history of political engagement and activism, although in recent years that has not been the case. The work environment is laid-back and warm.

    Cons

Very disorganized and at times chaotic; huge disconnect between upper management and line staff; poor training and on-boarding; lack of accountability and transparency; pays lip-service to diversity and social justice while simultaneously exhibiting profound lack of awareness of basic social justice concepts, lack of language capacity to serve non-English speaking participants, and poor cultural competency in program design and implementation. Leadership is politically driven, with ego and self-promotion coming before the health of the organization at times.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Glide (US) full-time

    Pros

Amazing mission driven organization. Does outstanding work in the community through their incredible programs.

    Cons

Strong personalities of Founders who refuse to let go. Impossible to maintain momentum in the Fundraising department with constant strifes with Founders/Executive office, insane turnover, no defined goals.

    Advice to Management

I don't see anything changing at Glide until Executive Leadership shifts.

I have been working at Glide (US) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Feeds the homeless. Volunteer department is really great. Health Clinic is world-class. World-wide famous Glide Ensemble (gospel choir). Everything is geared toward helping people become better people. Cecil Williams. You can bump into Maya Angelou, Warren Buffet, Nancy Pelosi and many other well-known people any day - you never know. Always interesting things going on.

    Cons

High turnover of upper management as well as lower-level staff. They have split personality disorder: are they a charity, or a church? Executive level management really doesn't know what their doing or have no real direction for the staff. Certain people at the executive level refuse to retire (and they should have a long time ago). They have no shared vision of where the company is or should be headed.

    Advice to Management

Why give it? They won't consider it.
