I worked at Global Communities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Headquarters office: very dedicated, kind staff, good mission, and strong financial controls. Good opportunities for learning about international development and USAID. It is a great place for new graduates, Peace Corps volunteers, and/or people who want to enter into the development field, as well as for well established development professionals/expats who are looking to relocate a strong, stable organization in the DC area. Senior management are receptive to listening to staff concerns.

    Cons

Headquarters office: For junior staff, pay is consistently lower than the market rate at other organizations, and promotions are rare. Organization does not have a formal career ladder.

    Advice to Management

It is easy to find out what people make at equivalent positions in the development world. If lower salaries are offered to talented junior employees, they may take them and then leave after a short period of time. Figuring out a promotion system similar to what many other NGOs have done in the sector would also help with retaining strong employees.

I have been working at Global Communities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most managers are flexible, good mission, HR listens to complaints

    Cons

Junior positions start out with very low salaries. Upward mobility is more difficult in some departments, high turn over

    Advice to Management

Your crazy high bonuses reflect negatively on the mission of the organization especially in some countries where they had to lay off staff due to projects ending

    Pros

Great team environment and employees committed to mission and goals of organization. Many creative , hard working individuals who are making a real difference in the lives of the people in the world communities they serve. Very diverse cultural environment and a great place for exchange of ideas and developing improved methods to achieve goals.

    Cons

As in many business environments, individual experience and effectiveness is impacted by the relationship with the department manager. Management is decentralized by function and project, so a poor manager can have a very adverse effect on goal attainment.

    Advice to Management

Improve management training and develop assessment scenarios for managers.

I worked at Global Communities full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You're a part of good work that benefits people around the globe. Non-profit, excellent benefits.

    Cons

CHF is over-reliant on CHF grants. When a project ends, so can one's employment.

    Advice to Management

Don't just talk about and plan to increase private funding, make it happen. Also, don't keep your staff in the dark.

    Pros

It is nice to work in a non profit industry. It feelsl like you are making a difference in a positive way.

    Cons

Very little opportunity for verticle movement and career advancement. There can be some disrespect among departments--usually indicative of organization however.

    Advice to Management

I believe that management is wisely seeking alternative funding sources which will decrease the dependency on government funding. Perhaps, attemps development program in the US to increase audience and may as a result enhance domestic funding.

    Pros

There are great people who work at CHF, very dedicated to their jobs and the organization's mission. Good atmosphere in the office and meaningful work. The headquarter offices are nice.

    Cons

CHF doesn't offer the highest salary levels, they are lower than other similar organizations in the DC area. Their benefits package is standard. Sometimes the office is a bit slow paced.

    Advice to Management

CHF has great potential to be a more successful International Development organization. The senior managemetn needs to be more strategic in its fundraising activities and build more institutional comptencies within the organization.

I worked at Global Communities full-time

    Pros

Lots of interesting projects and tools that can keep you engaged in the company's programming. Very process driven way of doing business development.

    Cons

The management was undergoing a restructuring at the time which led to a number of ambiguities and a number of people transitioning into other jobs. Hopefully everything is now settled.

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunities for ataff to explore different aspects of the organizations programming across deparrltments and country offices.
