I have been working at Global Communities full-time

    Pros

Company is well established and conveniently located.

    Cons

Working overtime is the rule rather than the exception. Opportunities for growth are limited and unevenly distributed. When you are so distant from the cause, it is much harder to catch the spirit.

    Advice to Management

Aim for more transparency, accountability and consistency. Be up front about positions and policies and who they apply to. Ensure they are fairly represented and applied. No benefits or bonuses or causes or even qualified people encourage employees to stay as much as having nice managers does.

    Pros

The people are so great to work with and The health benefits are pretty good too. It's growing fast.

    Cons

It can be hard to find opportunities for growth in your career. A lot of people are generally unhappy with management.

    Advice to Management

Think about the little guy sometimes. We need to grow too and get some experience. We are the future of the organization.

    Pros

    Flexible work environment
    Dedicated staff
    Interesting projects and issues
Always something new to work on
    Great travel opps

    Cons

Little attention to morale, equity or management.
Too many managers with poor mngt skills.
Too much reliance on junior (inexpensive) staff who have no experience and need more mentoring than they can get with intense workload.
Also too many senior managers who have no background in development so don't see project and organizational shortcomings. Tout everything as a great success.
Too busy going after new $ to focus enough on what they need to be managing.
Nobody stops to question reasons for excessive staff turnover.
Great income disparities between senior mngt and most staff

    Advice to Management

    Do a management assessment/staff survey
Start asking employees at all levels for their input
Bring in new senior managers from outside development orgs

I worked at Global Communities full-time

    Pros

fast-paced environment with lots of work to be done, but lower-tier staff are under-valued and under-appreciated. Many opportunities to learn and network at events

    Cons

Staff are very much underpaid. Long hours sometimes, and work carries into weekend.

    Pros

The people, both that you work with, and the people we help abroad

    Cons

    - Overworked, we are all spread so thin
    - Each department is understaffed from the program side, to finance, to HR, to the executive office.
    - Underpaid, even based on NGO standards we are underpaid at almost every level but the senior management

    Advice to Management

    Stop picking favorites

I have been working at Global Communities full-time

    Pros

    - Opportunity to do meaningful work and advance if you push for it
    - Committed, pleasant, competent colleagues, especially middle-management and junior staff

    Cons

    - Not all departments are as effective as others
    - Job satisfaction largely depends on what you make of the experience and what team you're on

I have been working at Global Communities full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people you meet, and the potential for travel. Traveling to a country and really seeing the people you help makes all the difference in this industry. Its why I've stayed as long as I have.

    Cons

There's no consistency within the company. Rules aren't applied a crossed the board. Also I just heard about another great employee leaving from our shared services team and its making me want to leave too. Program staff can't work to the best of their ability if they feel like their support is falling from under them. Things like Finance, HR, and IT are essential, and its falling apart.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the board: Get rid of the excess VPs. Its too many cooks in the kitchen
Advice to management: Try to keep the best employees, those that are working towards the major goal of Global Communities.

"Global Communities is what you make of it"

    Pros

Global Communities actively encourages staff to identify and implement the best solutions to the toughest challenges in international development. Its community development approach ensures that staff are exposed to knowledge from people all over the world and urged to apply those lessons in other regions and topics. Global Communities welcomes creative thinkers who come up with new ideas (even if those ideas end up failing) and people who are adaptable to difficult situations, personalities and politics. Still, in 20 years in Washington, I have yet to see a more enthusiastic, collaborative, innovative group of people than the ones at Global Communities.

    Cons

Like most jobs, one's experience at Global Communities largely comes down to who your supervisor is. So if you do not have the most enlightened manager (or you have one who is overburdened or under-qualified), you will have to work harder to make your views known and your work recognized.

    Advice to Management

Keep an open dialog with staff and bear in mind that you will learn much more through one-on-one conversations than through staff-wide meetings. Know that while you can't make everyone happy all the time, you can focus on trends - both positive and negative - and act accordingly to improve morale and retain top talent.
