I worked at Global Kids full-time

    Pros

Working with this organization can be a good leg-up to further career opportunities is education or social services. On the job you gain important perspectives about working within NYC public high schools that can be beneficial-and are often sought ought-in many work environments with high school aged youth.

    Cons

This company tends to lack in management and supervision. They are fairly inflexible with work hours and expect staff to work long hours with heavy commutes for very little pay. There is an overall lack of transparency in the organization.

    Advice to Management

Your staff are worthwhile, they keep your programs running and keep kids coming in the door. Pay them what they deserve, offer adequate benefits packages, go the extra mile for your employees.

I worked at Global Kids full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Welcoming and diverse staff at direct service level.
    Amazing students!
If you stay there long enough eventually the turnover will generate a promotion for you.
Some of the mid-level managers really do look out for their staff.

    Cons

Out-of-touch upper-level management that puts funding above mission and lacks transparency with direct service staff.
Inequities of pay and lack of standardized pay grades (for example, two people at the same position with the same educational and experiential background, one might make more than the other without explanation even if the latter has been at GK longer); staff not compensated at a level comparable to cost of living or in acknowledgment of advanced degrees - or even just compared to other NPO's doing similar work!
The main office can be kind of gossipy.

    Advice to Management

Standardize pay grades; collaborate and receive more feedback from your direct service staff. Reconsider what factors about your work environment cause high turnover. Recommit to a human rights framework not just for your students but also your staff.
