I have been working at Globecomm full-time

    Pros

Unlimited sick time accrual, great deal of independence, some of my colleagues are very skilled at what they do, established supplier of telecommunication services and infrastructure, interesting work, long history with some customers

    Cons

Senior Management is very disconnected from day to day activity, lack of Senior Management strategic vision, no focus on core business, sales of new services relies on a few sales personnel and others sales personnel under-perform with no expectation of repercussion, benefits package is less than attractive to new talent, very limited potential for promotion or advancement

    Advice to Management

Better communication of strategic goals and how we get there and how we as employees can make that happen, better communication of direction of company and long range plan, time to start cutting at the senior management structure to create a more robust response to changing market requirements, start holding management and sales accountable for poor performance as a company cannot survive if it is only depending on the alpha employees to carry the day. Stop punishing those who perform well with more work, it destroys morale and leads to reduced performance as there is no benefit to doing a great job.

    Pros

Great for entry level engineering roles. The company has a very strong satellite communications integration portfolio with government, media and enterprise clients. Managing some great, one of a kind projects. There's serious learning opportunity.

    Cons

Company tends to work in silos since it's project oriented. If you are not involved in a project with a positive outlook, you are in danger of getting laid off without notice. This happens on a periodic basis. I have seen entire department staff let go in multiple occasions.

    Advice to Management

Constant cycle of layoffs and rehiring poisons the employee trust and morale. Work on retaining talent and transfer of knowledge and expertise among different departments. Human resources needs to do a better job.

I have been working at Globecomm full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None. Absolutely no pros to working here that I can see.

    Cons

In order to appear profitable and sell the company, they froze salaries (no raises) and discontinued 401k matching. That was a few years ago. The company got sold and the promises that the 401k matching would return have not been met. No raises either.

No path for progress. No interest in developing their talent.

There have been several times were I have been personally told they would speak with me about a concern and all I hear is silence. They don't make any attempt to contact me nor respond to inquiries.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your employees and take care of them. If you can't come thru with something, say so. Don't offer empty promises. Respect your employees.

    Pros

Great atmosphere, nice friendly people. Many of the employees have strong skill-sets at what they do. Leaders int he industry, and are often sought out as subject matter experts in the industry.

    Cons

Managers are often too burdened to effectively lead. Work with a very lean staff, and some employees that are very good at what they do can become burnt out; while other employees are left sitting around with little to nothing to do.

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunities for Managers to take time management workshops, as well as invest more in the benefits packages. Cutting too much cost with benefits will eventually lend to significant losses of the stronger employees.

I worked at Globecomm full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent balance between personal and work life. Definitely some fire drill deadlines, but that happens everywhere. Some good managers/executives. Decent benefits - not great.

Executive Mgmt has done a good job of keeping the VC dogs "at bay". But, not a lot of clear top-down direction.

    Cons

Great public company that was taken private when purchased by a venture capitalist. New owners have stayed at arms length, and out of day to day mgmt. But there's a feeling that the other shoe can drop at any second and the company "consolidated". For now - good employer, but don't look at it as a long term situation. Other than the teleport, NOC and some support people for the antennas, there's no real reason the company needs to be on Long Island. The owning company has a history of selling off it's assets a few years after buying them - which puts the sell-off of GCOM at late 2016-early 2017.

    Advice to Management

Recognize there are other hiring companies with better benefits out there, competing for the same candidates.

I worked at Globecomm full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits,
    Flexible schedules,
    Convenience location.

    Cons

Poor management , especially in the software department. Since this is not a software company, it lacks many essential things from software development cycle.
You dont know what you should work on or how your work gets evaluated.
There are couple senior developers that never delegates what they know and complain that they are busy all the time while the rookies sits there useless.
Very long cubicals, very little sunlight and everything in whole place is gray that makes the place very depressing.

    Advice to Management

Keep track of your engineers, challenge them more.

I worked at Globecomm full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

good people in the working trenches

    Cons

management lies to everybody to keep them working
was there 3 years and never a pay raise to anybody
promotions rare unless your upper management
HR does not represent the workers at all
Health insurance was extremely more expensive each year
40 people where let go last year with out any warning
25 people let go this year
they would rather cut employees to show money rather then make and or collect the money owed to the company
loyalty is demanded to the CO. but the they are not loyalty to the employee, they will let you go for anything.
