      Secure job and reliable income

      Pros

*Disclaimer* Some of these pros and cons may be geographically specific so please check first as they may/may not apply to you . You get to drive around and meet new people everyday. As a people person and a lover of driving I really enjoy it. The job is very secure. You receive 4 weeks holiday pay per annum. The rate of pay is very good. The job is easy to do. The company pay for your initial training which you repay at a small weekly cost over 3 years, so no up front cost (had I known this I would have applied years ago.) Free bus travel (handy if you are in the process of getting a car or do not yet own one). You get to give a family member or a friend free bus travel as part of your employment. I found the training to get your licence and the classroom part of how to use ticket machines, and deal with different scenarios is excellent.

      Cons

This type of shift work is a shock to the system if you haven't done it before, which I hadn't. I would strongly reccomend anyone thinking about doing this job to look into working patterns as with a family with small children (or being a single parent needing to arrange child care) it can be a deal breaker which I believe is why this industry has a high turnaround of new staff who are unaware. You have very early starts and very late finishes (sometimes you finish less than 12 hours before your next duty). This leaves little to no time for family life as you literally go home, eat, shower and go to bed. It is hard to plan ahead outside your holiday as you find out your working hours only two weeks in advance which can make things difficult and you may not be able to change it. You can meet abusive passengers on the road or fare dodgers but the company equips you with the training to deal with it. Some also may find driving around all day with no radio or anyone to talk to boring as the novelty of driving a bus wears off after a few weeks but it depends on the person. This depends on the depot, but limited or no parking meaning you may have to get the bus to work

      Promising Start but...

Oct 19, 2020 - Administrative in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Free transport pass, given opportunities to progress, allowed to work with minimal supervision/not being micromanaged

      Cons

Took on a lot of additional responsibility but ultimately, didn't get paid for the majority of extra work (was told it should be done for 'personal progression' not extra money...) Communication across every department and the company is dire and leads to a lot of wasted time/resources and a constant cause of frustration. Staff are not held to the same standard depending on their manager - some dept's have staff go AWOL multiple times, come in late regularly and do nothing. HR are mostly useless in every regard but especially with complaints - don't follow up properly and dealt with serious complaints by arranging 'conversations'. People are employed without proper background checks or the relevant experience - managers will employ and/or promote friends/family members and not provide interview notes to HR. HR don't check or chase these up anyway. All in all, it's a very behind-the-times place to work, they claim to work to certain 'visions, attitudes & beliefs' but nobody actually practices them. They waste so much time and money because no one proactively looks to modernize or improve processes or take any responsibility. There are far too many "managers" who do little to nothing and get paid far too much (e.g. The I.T department) but the company won't pay hard workers what they deserve.

Exhausting work load/hours. Bleeding every legal minute of work out of drivers. No work life balance. No family time. Military style management regime with management that have no experience and just out of fast track graduate program.
