I have been working at Godiva Chocolatier full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The support received from upper management is wonderful, very supportive and encouraging. High standards set in place for all staff, company rewards staff

    Cons

Training for staff is thorough but staff I had when starting were not trained properly which has led to some turn over of staff.

    Advice to Management

Would like to see higher wage for key holders to entice good candidates. Would also like to see better access to links, email, etc- very difficult to be productive when trying to log into server all day.

    Pros

Company does a fairly good job of communicating with employees. Most stores maintain a small staff, which for me, is pro. If the manager is pretty good at hiring you'll find yourself part of a tight knit staff.

Customers are generally happy and fun to deal with, great job for people who like to socialize.

    Chocolate taste pretty good.

    Cons

Staffs tend to skew younger as is the case with most retail positions. This sometimes causes situations of high turnover and employees that don't totally buy into the culture.

There are often times of working by yourself. This isn't a negative in the sense that the job is impossible to do but becomes difficult because the company has 2 different sales angles that don't always align to each other. There is the self-treat 5-10 dollar fast transactions and the more drawn out gift giving sales that range from 25-100 that could take take 10 minutes depending on the customization of the box. It requires 2 different sales tactics and, at the same time, the customers don't understand the larger picture and become frustrated with perceived delays in their transaction. When multiple people are on the floor this is rarely an issue as sales roles are often assigned. However, outside the weekends and peak sales months between Nov-Feb, there are rarely cases with multiple employees working.

    Advice to Management

I think a return to natural ingredients without fillers would be nice for the quality that the company tries to portray. This company in the early 2000s was natural to point where they weren't even using food coloring on any of their chocolate. They were actually ahead of the curve as far as the "natural food" craze. They have since decided to go away from this model and started to include corn syrups and other fillers almost at the exact moment the "natural" market started to heat up. I think it was bad vision for the time, should be noted that the company has new owner since then.

Godiva should also try to clarify its ultimate objective. It is difficult as a sales associate to balance helping a customer that might need thousands of dollars of boxes for a special event while also trying to appease someone that needs a small individual transaction. With such small staffs in becomes difficult to manage a sales floor during busier periods. I think both models of high end gifts and individual treats have their place but require two different mindsets from the employees and effectively 2 different store setups. Rarely are the stores big enough to even encourage the self treat angle. There are no tables, chairs, publicly available napkins, inside the store or often times outside in the mall that would encourage the coffee shop type atmosphere that the transactions would seem to align. Imagine a coffee shop where your coffee order would be delayed by 5-10 minutes because the barista is helping a customer decide on what take-home coffee assortment would be best for a birthday present. That is the situation as a sales associate and why several customers will become frustrated.

    Pros

Friendly co workers. As long as you know the protocol for everything, it is an easy job. Employee discount on their items.

    Cons

Managers I have worked with tend to give off a negative vibe ruining the working environment. Not a lot of opportunities for growth if you're not corporate.

    Advice to Management

Please better train and give performance reviews to store managers. Managers tend to blame employees for constant low store performance even with high rated reviews from secret shoppers. This is often caused by unorganized work flow, lack of awareness of low inventory, and no knowledge of dipping protocol even though corporate has a physical binder. Even with a top tier performance review by store manager on evaluation periods there is countless of times when I would get in trouble by following protocol said on the protocol binder because managers tend to not know what the protocol actually is and uses their own opinion as reference

    Pros

The people in the working teams have huge hearts and willing to help each other. The discount on the products.

    Cons

Executive leadership has gone from potential for the future to terrible, leading by continuous fear- it is heart breaking to see this change in the last two years. I'm not sure Mr Ulker (owner) realizes how terrible it is.
The designs in the U.S. are dated & out of touch. The whole thing is incredible sad...lost touch & losing it it future.
