I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Working with some of the best in the business technically. Good focus on health, safety, and the environment. Most can find good job security within the company, just being willing to work slightly out of your own comfort zone.

    Cons

Added stress with global realignment of company structure. Lots of good folks let go in the process. A few good folks choosing to leave due to the restructuring and potential fear of poor company future outlook.

    Advice to Management

Continue to develop, mentor, train, and promote from within. Don't scoff at getting personnel professional training when asked about, if it&s within reason.

I worked at Golder Associates full-time

    Pros

The people you directly work with are good and willing to help you. Work being brought in is consistent.

    Cons

Upper level management takes hand off approach, more managerial than leadership attitude. Money focused business model and sacrificing on quality of work products

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Offices all over the world with many opportunities to work on location, flexibility is an added bonus to doing fieldwork. Good benefits which grow as your tenure w/ the company increases.

    Cons

Everything is run by the "Principals & Associates" (Ps & As). The idea of buying stock in the company may seem appealing when you hear of the returns on your investment; however, be sure to read all the fine print b/c you won't be getting most of those returns unless you stay w/ the company for >2 years. Additionally, the structure of the company stock program too closely resembles a pyramid scheme for me to be comfortable...

    Advice to Management

More transparency. The P&A system resembles an elitist fraternity social club, where you buy your credibility and respect from your peers. As a junior-level employee I have no desire to be a part of something like that and I am certain that feeling is in the majority for junior-level employees throughout the company.

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

You will meet technically gifted people and learn a lot in a short space of time about a variety of industries. You will do well if you fit in and are male with a big ego and are prepared to sacrifice your work/life balance and morality to succeed. Otherwise prepare to work hard for little reward and empty promises and make sure you can tolerate a bit of colonialist or sexist 'banter' now and again.

    Cons

Don't expect a supportive environment. Management style is poor. Managers are often in positions due to length of service and are incompetent at managing people. 'Breadcrumbing' to junior staff is common place.

    Advice to Management

Succession planning? Recognise your people, don't wear then out to the point of mental breakdown, then leave them totally unsupported.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Most of the people want to be here. They enjoy what they do and want to share. The work is varied and interesting. There is a lot of trust if you want to develop into an area.

    Cons

Deliberately limited structure which doesn’t suit everyone. Can feel top heavy.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate, communicate, communicate

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

The people at Golder and brilliant and creative, and pride themselves on filling niche roles in solving complex problems. If you end up in a good core group with a good supervisor your experience will be great. I gained great experience, and learned a lot.

    Cons

If you end up with a poor supervisor or no one who has your back in mentoring you or advocating for your career, you will get lost and pigeonholled. Terrible management, with emphasis on profitability now. Talented people are all leaving, but staff are not being replaced, and remaining employees are left barely trending water trying to keep up with the demands without proper support. Culture has become completely...

    Pros

    - Renowned in the marketplace as an excellent company - Good benefits, including assistance with transit pass - Interesting and varied projects - Some of the senior staff are world leaders in their fields - Great modern office building

    Cons

    - Senior management often seem uninterested, or are difficult to track down, making project work extremely inefficient. - Unfriendly coworkers - Vancouver is famed for its aloof residents, but the Golder office seems to be a special collection of these individuals. - Little consideration of the well being of staff - especially during busy periods - Relatively high staff turnover

    Advice to Management

Be more approachable and available to those in need of assistance.

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Great place to work and learn. I was employed in a few offices and able to expose myself to a variety of different technical tasks.

    Cons

Limited advancement. At times it seems like just going with the flow and not making any proactive career moves was the best chance at advancement.

    Advice to Management

    Develop employees. Give them opportunity
