I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than a year

      Pros

This office features dedicated technical experts who are content to share their knowledge and expertise and in general a productive environment for young technical folks to acquire transferable skills. Management appears concerned over the welfare of its employees and is serious about performance reviews. Company offers a fairly generous time-off policy that separates sick and vacation time. Decent medical, dental,...

      Cons

Expectations are occasionally unrealistic. The position/compensation structure is poorly defined and tends to favor those having the most experience that Golder deems relevant. Case in point, I entered this company with over 10 years of technical engineering experience and an advanced degree to be placed on basically the same pay grade as engineers 3-4 years out of college with bachelor's degrees, which quite honestly...

      Advice to Management

Improve definition of position structure and broaden salary ranges to better accommodate those with more overall work experience. Provide a monetary award to employees who successfully complete the probationary period. Offer positions by telephone prior to sending an E-mail to demonstrate your sincerity and provide the candidate a better opportunity to negotiate. Nix the PDG program.

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

      The people I worked with.

      Cons

Found glass door too late, observed I was making 20k less than the lowest reported salary for my position. Felt ignored over the years, asking for certain training, constantly told next year, next year. watched new employees get said training within a year of hire. Got pigeonholed too. Healthcare is high deductible 20/80 without any out of pocket max i believe, making it unaffordable for junior staff with families....

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Good sick time benefit 401k bonus if company does well Opportunity to work on different projects (depends on what office you work for and who you work for) Salary is average.

      Cons

Only way to get a decent bonus is to own a lot of shares. ( those who have bought a lot of shares recently have lost money as the share price has gone down) Health benefits are more expensive than others in same business. You only get to work on those projects that senior consultants in your office get. Golder is bad about sharing resources and looking what other offices are doing. Chargability counts and you may get...

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 6 years

        Pros

Company has an office in pretty much all the major cities in the US, and it is not difficult to transfer between them if one wants to seek new challenges. Being a multidiscipline company, Golder offers the opportunity to gain experience in different industries and to be a part of fairly unique projects

        Cons

Very low employee recognition. Salaries are very low compared to all competitors of similar size. Golder does not promote the growth of key personnel. Managers and supervisors are rarely capable of identifying and promoting talent and stick to a very limiting career framework. For an employee owned company, we, the shareholders, get little in return.

        Advice to Management

Even though the business is now managed in a better way, the success of this company (like in all companies) relies on their employees. Take care of your employees! Pay them at a minimum market salaries, recognize their efforts, institute a culture of advancement and innovation, and please remove the people that do not believe in the new ways from managerial positions. Our careers are being managed by non-believers!!

        Advice to Management

Convert into a company now. Associates should attract new clients instead of resting with regular clients.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 9 years

        Pros

Many clever and experienced senior staff with strong technical skills in the field of ground engineering and environmental management work at Golder. The company is often sole sourced for complex and technically challenging ground engineering projects, by many of the worlds leading companies. You will learn a lot if you are prepared to commit to your role and apply yourself technically. You won't find a company employee...

        Cons

Golder has struggled to grow beyond its traditional ground engineering capabilities. In the past (and still today to a certain extent), management positions have been filled exclusively by people selected internally who want to move into lucrative managerial roles that are separated away from the technical work. Often, this has resulted in the selection of unsophisticated managers who lack dynamic or progressive skills...

        Pros

Good opportunity for new graduates to enter mining geotechnical field. Work on various projects, different commodities, different ground condition and mining methods.

        Cons

Limited and slow carrier growth potential early on. Strong personal connection needed to advance in company. Few principals control company. Run by non-professional managers. Non-immigrant friendly.

        Advice to Management

Open up the company. Allow new and junior level employees to advance higher faster. Change culture to be more socially responsible.

Good for young, green, fresh graduates looking to get some initial experience. Some offices have fantastic, bright, helpful colleagues who make you want to work hard for their benefit too. Well known brand in geotechnical, environmental, and civil engineering field. Culture and values sound good on paper. The left hand may not know what the right hand is doing. Company needs more focused action. Purported culture is often only given lip service. A lot of flag waving and cheering (easy to get caught up with during the honeymoon phase, but you'll see through the facade eventually). Pay is mid-lower range to competitors. Advice to Management

Rethink the long term sustainability of your business structure; particularly in management structure (make it so there is more definitive action, rather than so many P&A's trying to lobby each other for more support), and values/culture (if you only value seniors who bring in the dollars, you're going to end up with sociopaths at the top. Balance it out with absolute requirements for mentorship... something that was...

        I worked at Golder Associates

        Pros

Good work hours, average compensation, most managers seem to care but do not have the time or commitment from higher management to properly manage people. It seems as though the company is committed to improving relations with employees, however there does not seem to be a plan. Small bonuses are sometimes used to increase engagement, but the root cause of low morale does not seem to be monetary.

        Cons

If you are senior and well recognized in your field you will be respected within the company, however junior and intermediate professionals need to have a strong character and unwavering commitment to earn respect and recognition. Promotions within the company are not managed well and seem to reflect either poor or no planning. Recognition is not managed well, "If you don't squeak you won't get the grease!" is the best...
