I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Good work environment, team attitude, opportunity for advancement, and caring for staff’s well-being are just some of the “pros”. Golder is a great place to work - for those that are not afraid of work! The firm provides a career development plan for each staff and also recognizes and develops “high performers”. Furthermore, being an employee-owned company has several benefits.

    Cons

Sometimes you will need to log long-hours due to client demands.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Golder Associates for more than 9 years

    Pros

Flexibility to pursue opportunities and markets I'm interested in. Dynamic, highly technical team that does some really impressive work. Great client relationships. I've been able to travel internationally for work and worked on international projects from the comfort of my office. Very reasonable expectations of workload compared to the other consulting firms I've worked for. So I've had a lot better work-life balance...

    Cons

None. I really enjoy the people I work with. We have had some people let go from underperforming markets, but the future is bright and we have some great projects I'm working on right now. Our new CEO is very inspirational. Can't wait to see what the future brings.

    Advice to Management

Clients want more Golder services. I've been getting more work from clients telling others to use Golder.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Golder is a company of the greatest technical people around given ample opportunity to do the kind of work that interests them. A global company. Employee owned. Flexible work environment is possible in some locations. There is ability to move around the company - different areas of the U.S. and around the globe. The biggest small company around.

    Cons

The flat hierarchy can make quick decision making a challenge.

    Advice to Management

Figure out a way to keep the "big company" feel at bay.

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Golder is an employee-owned company and thus each employee is empowered to help the company succeed. The culture is one of transparency where all employees are provided with information such as financial results and are afforded many opportunities to provide input to the direction of the company. The transparent culture of the company also benefits the project managers who have access to niche experts regardless of...

    Cons

Not too many cons -- Golder is a well-run company. Perhaps one con is that local management can sometimes exhibit a culture not consistent with the corporate culture that has helped Golder succeed for over 50 years.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what is needed for the company to succeed.

    Pros

This employee owned company strives to be the best in the industry and rewards dedicated, hard working, intelligent employees with abundant opportunities. To enjoy the collegial atmosphere you will need to take pride in your ownership of the company and be committed to serving clients at the highest level.

    Cons

We compete with the "big boys" but struggle without their resources. We also struggle to maintain our culture and identity as we grow.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the core business. Fully evaluate the ROI on all investments. Don't waste our limited financial resources.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Employee owned - the company tends to hold on to employees even when times are tough. Diverse client base with lots of work in economy proof areas. Work loads tend to be fairly steady and aren't the feast or famine varieties found in other consulting firms. Golder has some real talented people and exciting new divisions.

    Cons

Meager pay increases and paths for promotion within the company. Many times the only way to get ahead is to find a job elsewhere, and threaten to leave. The company stock system seems questionable, and difficult for junior staff to afford to be part of. Management is slow to deal with problem staff, and promotions/raises seem to have little to do with performance. Communication between groups and offices is generally...

    Advice to Management

Try actually listening to the average employee and not just the other Ps and As. Find new ways to reward employees for doing and excellent job, and don't be afraid to move people out of positions where they have struggled for years. It shouldn't be a surprise that often Geologists and Engineers don't make great managers...

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The people. I have made lifelong friends from my time at Golder. Employee owned so people have personal interest in work duties. Benefits are great although a little pricey. Variety of work. I got to work on a variety of projects with different scopes of work. Great place to start a career. Once you become a Golder employee, there is an opportunity to stay there for a very long time. Cons

Field staff are expected to pay up front for field costs, which can be very difficult for young professionals starting their careers. Salary is lower than industry standards. Expected to travel a lot(field staff). No clear path to grow career. There are a few terrible managers I experienced, but common at most workplaces. They have a hard time adjusting to the market conditions.

    Advice to Management

    Keep improving health and safety.

    Pros

Employee owned, respected, quality work over quantity, flexible work place, opportunties, mentoring, cross-specialty work, travel, international support system, great pay and good benefits.

    Cons

Too much information sometimes, young leadership that requires managing.

    Advice to Management

Give the expansion offices the support (internal and external) they need to grow and become self sufficent.
