I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Talented consultants have a lot of freedom. If you like working in a dynamic/changing culture, this is the place for you. Good benefits - sick leave separate from vacation. You can accrue sick time over your career. Allows for full pay for maternity/paternity leave if you have worked here for a few years. Compensation package rewards those willing to invest in the company and top performers.

    Cons

If working in a dynamic/changing culture stresses you out, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Slow down a little on the change.

I worked at Golder Associates part-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Well respected company, technically intelligent people, very good benefits. If you are brought into the organization early in your career, this is a great place to grow and become technically strong. The CEO, Hisham Mahmoud, has a great vision and if he is successful in turning this company around Golder will once again become a main stay in the industry. Unfortunately, some of the appointed lieutenants that run the...

    Cons

Very evident that you are working within a conglomerate of small consulting firms, i.e. not team oriented. There is a severe lack of standardization. New senior members have a hard time fitting into the culture. While 'collaboration' is the buzz word of the day very few practice it. If you are a senior level person joining the firm, you will need to bring your practice into the company. But ask yourself, if you already...

    Advice to Management

Break the 'me' and 'mine' mentality and force a true collaboration culture. Offer training for your people at all levels. Evaluate your current leadership, while many have seniority due to years of service and may be technically competent; they are not automatically qualified to be labeled as project leaders and managers in particular when it comes to the execution of large projects. Unfortunately, it is these large...

      Pros

Amazing people, interesting and challenging work, good benefits

      Cons

It's been tough times for Golder the past few years and changes were necessary, but many feel the staffing changes are completely spreadsheet-driven and do not take into account the impact to the culture of the organization, which was what always made Golder a great place to be and differentiated it from its competitors.

I worked at Golder Associates for more than 20 years

      Pros

Employee Owned company, Good working environment, Good benefits, Local management was fair

      Cons

Poor upper management decisions on growing the company. Bad investments

      Advice to Management

Should have remained a regional company structure. Each region manage it's own growth and profits.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

      Good job opportunities, good benefits

      Cons

Senior control from Principals and Associates weakens business and leads to an outdated management system where ability is not rewarded so much as longevity and alignment with powerful seniors.

      Advice to Management

Remove P&A system and renegotiate share holding system with owners/shareholders.

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Good benefits, good salary, people were friendly, clean office space

      Cons

Horrible management, not given enough work, hard to learn and grow. Terrible deadline schedule, too much politics at the top of the order. Golder is going through a tough time financially. Lots of layoffs and downsizing.

      Advice to Management

Hire more people and grow by hiring more mid level people rather than keeping only upper and entry level folks. Need to implement a better training program like some of the larger firms

      Pros

High in technical expertise, good benefits and flexible. Corporate leadership is excellent with committed management team. Good for personal growth opportunities

      Cons

Poor management of some operations, so choose your office carefully. Intra-office competition seems high. Collaborative aspect needs work.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Offices all over the world with many opportunities to work on location, flexibility is an added bonus to doing fieldwork. Good benefits which grow as your tenure w/ the company increases.

      Cons

Everything is run by the "Principals & Associates" (Ps & As). The idea of buying stock in the company may seem appealing when you hear of the returns on your investment; however, be sure to read all the fine print b/c you won't be getting most of those returns unless you stay w/ the company for >2 years. Additionally, the structure of the company stock program too closely resembles a pyramid scheme for me to be comfortable...

      Advice to Management

More transparency. The P&A system resembles an elitist fraternity social club, where you buy your credibility and respect from your peers. As a junior-level employee I have no desire to be a part of something like that and I am certain that feeling is in the majority for junior-level employees throughout the company.

I have been working at Golder Associates

      Pros

Good benefits package for healthcare, etc.

      Cons

Management seems to care little about staff not a Principal or Associate Level. Salaries are low. Difficult to advance professionally and little professional mentoring. Some offices are less women friendly than others.

      Advice to Management

Pay less attention to your Ps and As and more attention to the regular staff. Pay more attention to management of the individual offices and what goes on there. Develop a real mentoring program. Develop a program to promote women to senior technical and management positions in all offices.

I have been working at Golder Associates

      Pros

Employee ownership is often a blessing in this economy. Good balance of work and life and good benefits, although no maternity leave unless it is required by the state.

      Cons

What was it that I read elsewhere? The annual review process is a cowardly mechanism for unhappy backstabbers? Similar at Golder. No one has ever come to me and told me that they had a problem with my work. But, once it's review time, all that comes out, and more that you never even thought of. Also, since there is flat management, what one person directs you to do can be immediately overridden by the whims of another...

      Advice to Management

Please pass down your knowledge and leadership. So many in the very top levels are wonderful examples and great motivators to work with. So many others are the antithesis of leaders and motivators.
