I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

I work with some great people. Golder has been a fantastic place to work over the past several years. I have been able to interact directly with management at all levels. This is a consulting firm that has remained true to the entrepreneurial mind set. If you have an idea that has some synergy with the company, you can find support to pursue it. The new CEO and COO are changing the flavor of the company, but it seems...

    Cons

As a consulting firm, there is a heavy, but natural focus on utilization. When you combine this with a "build your own organic business" mindset, it can be a tough environment to feel like you are making ground. It is currently difficult to innovate as everyone is asked to focus on utilization.

    Advice to Management

Get some skunk works going. Develop KPIs that focus on profitability rather than changeability and let us lean into that profit to innovate.

      Pros

Golder has great people, smart colleagues, and a generally supportive atmosphere.

      Cons

They have been too reliant on a few sectors, and at the moment, they are very unstable. I'm sure they will figure out how to be profitable again.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Great people; friendly atmosphere; emphasis on health and safety. (Please note that this review was written by a US employee, but using "US" as reviewer location didn't seem to be allowed.)

      Cons

People without background in running a company are running the company; maybe hiring some MBAs would make more sense. Principals and associates seem to be the only people whose concerns are heard or acted upon. Group leaders seem clueless about what those in other groups do, and the managers have zero understanding of administrative workers' duties, workload, or other concerns. Often people are forced to "step out of...

      Advice to Management

Listen to employees at all levels, not just principals and associates. When there are layoffs, give the changes some time to have an effect before you plunge into slashing more jobs. Stop spending money on flying leaders around to meet with each other, especially when times are tough financially--don't just give lip service to cutting out nonessential travel.

      I worked at Golder Associates

      Pros

A vast array of opportunity for field work in exotic locations all over the world and exposure to a variety of interesting projects if you stay with the company. Great people (many of them). Some amazingly talented and competent people mixed in with the average ones you find at any company. It is rare but not impossible to find incompetent or poor performers here - a definite plus. Most of the offices allow for an ok...

      Cons

Very loose management and professional culture. A lot of flag waving and social activity goes on and many buy in to it, but much of the upper management (Associates, Principals) have no real teeth or direction. The senior managers are all experienced project engineers, and many of them are great salespersons, but they are not necessarily experienced corporate managers or business people - and it shows. Important corporate...

      Advice to Management

A true understanding of a healthy corporate culture must be gained, and that healthy culture must then be pursued at all costs. Bring all of the individual groups and offices together to one common direction on important issues. Some individuals may not like the changes, but this type of evolution will take Golder to the next level and keep them competitive. You can bet that other successful companies are not sitting...

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Met some great people in my time with Golder and in the beginning it was a great work environment. They also had a great benefits package and retirement plan.

      Cons

Management is great at dangling the carrot in front of you. They promise the world but if you want to advance anywhere in the company you better be prepared to invest big money in a company that won't invest in you. Golder Shares are ridiculously expensive and to gain any traction towards being a P or an A you will need hundreds of thousands worth of shares. As a tech, we were told that we could no longer book holidays...

      Advice to Management

Stop lying. Tell the truth and listen to your employees when they say they are overwhelmed and tired. Of course we like making money by working overtime, but we need a work/home life balance that is non existent for field staff, what good is the money if you can't be home to enjoy it. If you can't staff Jobs properly, don't take on so much work and cause stress and fatigue on workers. I hope when Hisham sails off on his...

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

        Pros

Hisham has put the company on pretty good financial foundations after the previous CEO and BoD (which shirked its duty and provided NO oversight) ran the company into near-bankruptcy. Along with some dubious financial twists to re-value the share price, those who own a lot of shares have seen their wealth greatly increase. There are still some great people who work for Golder, but they are increasingly leaving,...

        Cons

The share price has been inflated a the expense of everything else, such as salaries, benefits, facilities, etc. Hisham brought his own management team in and they RULE everything. Home-grown talent is largely in the mid-management ranks, and not in control. Hisham's management style is not all that different from Trump's - "It's my way or the highway!". The company is not Principal-led anymore, despite the official...

        Advice to Management

Time to get rid of Hisham and his cronies. I appreciate you putting the company back on to a sounder financial footing, but it is time to leave before you complete the destruction of the soul of Golder. Take your pals with you.

Too much focus on efficiency and profit. Could benefit from kicking it down a gear.
