    Pros

Great people; friendly atmosphere; emphasis on health and safety. (Please note that this review was written by a US employee, but using "US" as reviewer location didn't seem to be allowed.)

    Cons

People without background in running a company are running the company; maybe hiring some MBAs would make more sense. Principals and associates seem to be the only people whose concerns are heard or acted upon. Group leaders seem clueless about what those in other groups do, and the managers have zero understanding of administrative workers' duties, workload, or other concerns. Often people are forced to "step out of...

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees at all levels, not just principals and associates. When there are layoffs, give the changes some time to have an effect before you plunge into slashing more jobs. Stop spending money on flying leaders around to meet with each other, especially when times are tough financially--don't just give lip service to cutting out nonessential travel.

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

At Golder we work with talented, dedicated people at all technical levels. Clients come to us with challenging projects that often require unique solutions. The flat structure gives the opportunity to work with and learn from senior staff - if you are willing to take the initiative. There is a lot of room to design your own career path and develop your own practice within the Golder umbrella. Senior leaders are...

    Cons

Management is struggling with how to implement a vision for continued growth and integration of operations across geographic boundaries. Messages to line staff are often mixed - we want to invest for growth, but can't have any excess capacity to respond to opportunities. Senior staff are expected to lead, mentor, and develop business - but on their own time while still carrying a full load of project work. The Principal...

    Advice to Management

Think through initiatives from beginning to end, then chart the course to get to the goal rather than just starting and "seeing how it goes." Communicate the path clearly to all levels in the organization, not just the vision. Gain buy-in from senior Principals in advance. The somewhat sad fact is that management cannot make moves without consent from a relatively small group of vocal, senior Principals. This weakens...

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Salary - I started of at a low salary for my degree, but when mixed in with all the overtime and field work, the salary ended up being much higher (32% higher in my first year). Employee Performance Review Process - Golder used to be nominated in the top 10 best managed company for a reason. I attribute much of this to their detailed and extensive performance review process which involved employees being evaluated...

    Cons

Economic Downturn - Golder was hit hard by the economic downturn which led to ruthless layoffs and caused an atmosphere in the office full of negativity, stress, conflicts, and loss of teamwork. Golder made all attempts to cut corners to save money and employees. Employees who have lasted through this intensive layoff process continue to search for work elsewhere. My experience - Although I started as a junior, I was...

    Advice to Management

Keep the lengthy Employee Performance Review Process. It is not clear how individuals were picked to be laid off, but I can only hope that it was more detailed than salaries and percent chargeability. The performance review process could have been consulted to determine employees on a trajectory that could really benefit the company.

    Pros

Great office culture in the local office, good health and safety policies, very technically capable people.

    Cons

Hard to achieve work/life balance (one colleague lamented that the company were 'slave drivers'), pay was below average, career progress in local office was limited, limited external training opportunities including attending conferences.

    Advice to Management

Start looking after your employees better, especially the good ones.
