I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Good work environment, team attitude, opportunity for advancement, and caring for staff’s well-being are just some of the “pros”. Golder is a great place to work - for those that are not afraid of work! The firm provides a career development plan for each staff and also recognizes and develops “high performers”. Furthermore, being an employee-owned company has several benefits.

    Cons

Sometimes you will need to log long-hours due to client demands.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time

    Pros

There still are a number of talented people despite the mass exodus that continues to plague the company.

    Cons

There's a review below that I think demonstrates Golder's problems very well. A Principal says that the only negative is long hours, and advice to management is to "keep up the good work." That's how the Principals think: everything great, the CEO is king, and if there's a problem it's because you aren't working hard enough. With roughly 90% of the reviews here saying management...

    Advice to Management

If you honestly think the only issue in Golder is the long hours, the problem is you. If you have to constantly remind people what a great leader you are, you are no leader. If you have to threaten people to get your way, you are a coward and should be removed. If you are one of the people who honestly and actively lead, everyone knows you and you are, regrettably, in the minority. The flat management structure...

Invest in your staff both junior and intermediate Live the corporate values as they are stated

    I worked at Golder Associates

    Pros

When I started there a few years ago, it was great. Very knowledgeable coworkers who worked hard, regular meetings to keep everyone updated on the group's projects, paid well, fun teambuilding events and lunches, good benefits.

    Cons

Since the price of oil dropped, so has the organization and management of the company. Managers are disorganized, disrespectful of field techs. When PMs ask techs to go to the field, techs not allowed to say no. Poor work life balance, long hours (often evenings and weekends) or many days (sometimes up to 3 weeks) away from home. New management is unapproachable. Group seems...

I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Many clever and experienced senior staff with strong technical skills in the field of ground engineering and environmental management work at Golder. The company is often sole sourced for complex and technically challenging ground engineering projects, by many of the worlds leading companies. You will learn a lot if you are prepared to commit to your role and apply yourself technically. You won't find a company employee...

    Cons

Golder has struggled to grow beyond its traditional ground engineering capabilities. In the past (and still today to a certain extent), management positions have been filled exclusively by people selected internally who want to move into lucrative managerial roles that are separated away from the technical work. Often, this has resulted in the selection of unsophisticated managers who lack dynamic or progressive skills...

    Advice to Management

Analyse your markets, identify opportunities for growth, adopt an evidence based strategy to take opportunities and commit to executing that strategy so you can capitalise. Respond to business threats early, think laterally when making decisions. Remember that the smarts of your people - across all levels of experience - are the commodity the business is selling. Don't restrict those smarts to a single market or market...

    Pros

Colleagues are great! Opportunities to contribute through Golder's Trust Fund for kids.

    Cons

Poor leadership, failing business strategy If you enjoyed reading The Emperor's New Clothes as a child, you will love working here.. Keep your head down, work long hours and don't question the strategy at the corporate level. After 5 years of dismal business strategy, the employee held shares have dropped in value...for the first time in the company's history. Management's...

    Pros

Good opportunities for technical development Laidback culture Friendly colleagues Decent benefits Support for continued study and professional development Opportunities to work overseas and on large projects Staff with excellent technical knowledge, and access to global experts Good review process for deliverables People really do care about your well being

    Cons

Pay rises do not come hand in hand with promotions. They are seldom given out, so a promotion is essentially a pat on the back and more responsibility, without the remuneration. There is a lot of transparency for the promotion system, but the pay rise system is a complete mystery. Employee share scheme is difficult to buy into as a junior, and the shares are non tradeable. It is also a mystery to me how the share price...

    Advice to Management

Start handing out pay rises with promotions, and make the pay rise scheme transparent. The pay is abysmal, and talented employees are leaving. The number one complaint I hear from people at Friday night drinks is how long it has been since a pay rise, and how small they are. Good engineers don't always make good managers.
