I have been working at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Some top technical people, good chance to get a fairly broad exposure to various engineering and geological consulting disciplines

    Cons

Management's current direction is to commodify Golder's consulting practices, which is driving out all of the good people. Management has figured out how to cut costs, and has gone overboard with this because they can't figure out how to build revenue in order to meet set-in-stone margins. There is constant re-organization as if the management structure was what is hurting business rather than the market fundamentals...

    Pros

Multi-discipline format provides the opportunity for junior personnel to find the area of this field that they can excel in.

    Cons

It was a great company a decade ago, but with senior management changes became too focused on money and power. The teamwork across disciplines that fostered the cooperative work environment that grew the company has devolved into nepotism and favortism resulting in groups fighting each other for work. If you don't have a Principal or at LEAST a high-level Associates on your...

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Most coworkers were open and team players. Benefits were fine. Employee ownership is a plus. Good flexibility. Some caring, high quality mentors.

    Cons

Senior management focused internationally on growth and select markets. This significantly damaged the company as oil/gas and mining plunged and acquisitions failed. Add to that the international focus on having all countries using the same systems and overhead became unmanageable. Also a good ole boys club at least in the southern US. Although I had one of the highest utilization...

I worked at Golder Associates full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

There are diverse opportunities for experience serving on project teams and various types of clients. Your contributions will be valued in the culture if you are technically apt and apply yourself well. The company culture includes a lot of very good professional people, and if you're a good fit, you will be supported in pursuing a long and interesting professional career. Current restructuring of management and business...

    Cons

Golder probably shares many of the same cons as typical companies of its size. Recently, the company has been experiencing growing pains related to its size and exposure in some market sectors that have experienced economic contraction. However, some of this is typical and cyclical and business can be expected to revive. The senior management of Golder must now restructure and...

    Advice to Management

Change and grow the culture of training, mentoring, and accountability of junior staff. Change the approach to stock valuation to be less optimistic and backward looking. Improve manager and reviewers' accountability with respect to staff performance management.

    Pros

    Challenging projects, great technical communities

    Cons

No bonuses, increases in Africa are less than 5%, professional progress is only to the selected senior management favourites, no reward or recognition for hard work

    Advice to Management

Change senior management - in Africa- currently the lack of transparency gives the impression of distrust and uncertainty.

    Pros

    - Renowned in the marketplace as an excellent company - Good benefits, including assistance with transit pass - Interesting and varied projects - Some of the senior staff are world leaders in their fields - Great modern office building

    Cons

    - Senior management often seem uninterested, or are difficult to track down, making project work extremely inefficient. - Unfriendly coworkers - Vancouver is famed for its aloof residents, but the Golder office seems to be a special collection of these individuals. - Little consideration of the well being of staff - especially during busy periods - Relatively high staff...

    Pros

    Good benefits. Annual reviews.

    Cons

No work life balance. Compensation was below market average and basically impossible for anyone in the 'junior' category to move up. Employees are led to believe that if you sacrifice your time, relationships, and all external opportunities you will succeed, climb the corporate ladder, and continue to flourish in your role. Unfortunately, you may be ultimately cut regardless of how hard you worked. Employees...
