I worked at Goldman Sachs as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

You have the opportunity to learn a lot on the job. If you want to go to a place where you want to push yourself and see how well you perform under pressure, then this is the place. Office locations are good, on site facilities are good. Compensation is good for the role.

    Cons

You might end up with bad work-life balance due to the pressure.

I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - GS is very team centric and I enjoy working with such driven people.
    - Diversity at GS is fantastic and enhances the work environment as well as personal views.
    - I very much enjoy GS talks where we are able to hear from notable people and learn about insightful and inspirational topics. I feel this has broadened my world view and enhanced me from a personal perspective.
-Every area of the business is different but I feel mine has a good work/life balance which is very important to me
    - I feel GS has a great view towards women
    - Good benefits - healthcare, maternity, gym.

    Cons

    - Review system isn't particularly productive and can be very time consuming.
    - Technology is under resourced

    Advice to Management

GS does a good job in asking for feedback but as an individual I have never noticed any changes based on this feedback so perhaps they should promote this more.
From my perspective as an Executive Assistant I would comment that it is easy to feel overlooked in the 'big picture' and would encourage management to include assistants more with business updates and not forget our support is extremely important to the overall goal of the department / company. Reminding assistants of that and reminding people that they support, can only help motivate and make people feel more valuable and increase their job satisfaction.

    Pros

Great for the CV even if you only stick it for a few years great experience - the talk isn't always walked - go for it and keep taking the tablets ;-)

    Cons

Long hours a face time culture , don't be the first out the door even if your done everything you can for the day - which will be rare ! bonus was shockingly poor - or did my face not fit ! 3 years of a weekly season ticket , never felt it was long term - would I go back , Yes , wife says no way

    Advice to Management

Maybe it's changed in 10 years but I hear not

    Pros

Great people. You get a lot of responsibility quickly, and the hierarchy is very meritocratic so you do not feel held back. You also get job offers from competitors and other companies rather quickly.

    Cons

Very stressful, seems like the workload is higher than in other banks. All the desks on the trading floor are permanently short staffed so the hours are longer, but the salary is (or should be at least) higher.

One thing that annoyed my seniors and discouraged juniors, myself included, was that lateral hires got significantly better salaries than homegrown talent. That doesn't really inspire juniors or promote loyalty. Short term thinking.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on what juniors want and motivate people with other things than just the salary.

I worked at Goldman Sachs (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tough but intellectually stimulating environment. Lots of mentoring and emphasis on team culture. Benefits to junior bankers taken seriously but is very team dependent

    Cons

Work life balance is not the best and some teams can be more stressful than others.
Not everything is as meritocratic as it seems

wonderful firm to learn so much from and so much more than just finance. it shapes and grows you, if you'll let it! it demonstrates that hard work, integrity, teamwork & caring equals results and you can't help but want to succeed and be a part of it.

    Cons

very long hours of course! high expectations and you have to fight for air space but all of this is to be expected.

    Advice to Management

hindsight is wonderful and i wish i understood all that i developed at the time.... i'd love to be involved again one day as i went away and used all i learnt in building my own business. how does one even contemplate coming back?
