I worked at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people. You get a lot of responsibility quickly, and the hierarchy is very meritocratic so you do not feel held back. You also get job offers from competitors and other companies rather quickly.

    Cons

Very stressful, seems like the workload is higher than in other banks. All the desks on the trading floor are permanently short staffed so the hours are longer, but the salary is (or should be at least) higher.

One thing that annoyed my seniors and discouraged juniors, myself included, was that lateral hires got significantly better salaries than homegrown talent. That doesn't really inspire juniors or promote loyalty. Short term thinking.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on what juniors want and motivate people with other things than just the salary.

    Pros

wonderful firm to learn so much from and so much more than just finance. it shapes and grows you, if you'll let it! it demonstrates that hard work, integrity, teamwork & caring equals results and you can't help but want to succeed and be a part of it.

    Cons

very long hours of course! high expectations and you have to fight for air space but all of this is to be expected.

    Advice to Management

hindsight is wonderful and i wish i understood all that i developed at the time.... i'd love to be involved again one day as i went away and used all i learnt in building my own business. how does one even contemplate coming back?

    Pros

Great working experience. The people you work with make the job enjoyable. Great work policy.

    Cons

    Not great work life balance.

    Advice to Management

The compensation was extremely poor regardless GOOD personal performance. With so much work to do, managers need to keep their employees motivated by compensating better given the amount of work.

I worked at Goldman Sachs as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The internship was very well put together, mainly comprising talks in the first week but with more freedom in the second for working on the group project and networking with employees. The shadowing gave a good overview of the work being done and was a useful opportunity to engage with the employees on the work they do. I met some great people there, and it is a fantastic environment for pushing yourself to do great things. Being put up in a hotel for 2 weeks was a bonus too!

    Cons

The lack of computers available to the interns was often frustrating and the canteen was pretty expensive.

    Pros

Very intelligent and motivated people. Work assignments are high profile and interesting. Leading the way in trying to make the job more manageable for juniors (Saturday exception etc.). Good deal flow across teams and offices.

    Cons

Hours can be challenging, despite recent efforts to improve work life balance. Stress levels can be high at times, and analyst and associates are expected to learn quickly and to constantly take on increasing levels of responsibility.

    Advice to Management

Continue striving to improve the experience for junior bankers (Saturday rule and new tools for streamlining mundane tasks is a good start). Make sure analysts get deal experience as early as possible.

    Pros

I interned at Goldman Sachs from June 2015 - June 2016. I was in the Credit Flow middle office of the operations division. The culture at GS is extremely supportive and the exposure you receive to different divisions and institutions in the operations department is next to none.

    Cons

One of the down-sides would be the working hours. Often I had to be in hour after the traders have left.

    Advice to Management

I believe there should be a rotational program for interns so they can experience more than one division. It is very hard to know exactly what you want to do in your second year at university and i believe a placement year is to explore the countless opportunities out there.
