I worked at Goodwill full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fulfilling work with the individuals in the WAT program

    Cons

Policies based on ageism , dog and pony show for the board, no upward mobility

    Advice to Management

Stop expecting staff to be excited about the millions of dollars raised annually when we as staff don't see an increase in pay other than a "merit" raise.

I have been working at Goodwill part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Brick people will work together . Two good store managers named Roger and Eric . Eric is the man to go to if you want a problem solved, he understands and has class.

    Cons

a little better pay.- a more respect for workers

    Advice to Management

Act normal, treat people with respect, too many bosses who thinks they know everything and they really don't. Tell employees that a job well done once in a while for them to encourage and have a smile on their faces.

    Cons

High employee turnover and very demading expections.

    Advice to Management

    2. Create a winning culture for all employees – INSPIRE/EXCITE
    3. Build relationships & excitement with employees
    4. Help employees reach their full potential – Promote Within
    5. Give Store Management all the necessary tools/support to make Goodwill a better place to shop, train and work.

I worked at Goodwill full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You can learn a lot being in production and pricing out vintage or high end items.

    Cons

They over produce to meet deadlines. Managers usually freak out around their bonus time. Be prepared to be underpaid and over worked.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so money hungry. Goodwill is supposed to be about doing good. Over pricing items and having to turn new product every morning defeats the purpose and it all ends up at the bins anyway where you won't make any real money. Paying 7.99 for a used shirt will eventually get old and you'll lose business.

    I worked at Goodwill full-time

    Pros

My team was great, reliable, and cared about customers. They are the only reason I continued to work there (specifically, eCommerce. I cannot speak to working at corporate). Also, there are some really fascinating items that come into collectibles, and the overall mission serves a greater purpose.

    Cons

Change is slow or non-existent, there is little opportunity for advancement in this segment of the business, few members of management understand business strategy, infrastructure is incredibly outdated, work culture is negative, and some unethical practices are engaged in.

    Advice to Management

Don't ignore customer wants and needs, don't ignore employee feedback, and raise ethical standards among eCommerce management.

I worked at Goodwill full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You feel as though you are giving back to the community.

    Cons

Employees are underappreciated. Management is weak and changes often. Employees are talked down to. High employee turn-over. Procedures change with new management every few months. Stressful job.

    Advice to Management

Fix yourselves. When management begins whispering about "Getting out while you can" then there is obviously a problem that needs to be fixed.

I worked at Goodwill as an intern

    Pros

Work with the working poor. Good chance to practice solution-focused therapy, financial therapy, and case management within an organization.

    Cons

See the condescending way the staff talk about and treat Goodwill store employees. A store built on giving people a second chance (overlooking criminal backgrounds) seems to hold it over them even more.

    Advice to Management

Practice respecting these employees. It is tempting to hold things against them, especially when they are poor, late to work, or suffer mental health problems - but don't. If you've done them a favor by paying them 0.75 above minimum wage, don't think of them like they owe you. You gave them a chance because those things *shouldn't* be held against them, not by anyone. Treat them with respect.

    Pros

25% discount, interacting with the public

    Cons

The store is always a mess, understaffed and couldn't complete any set tasks.
