I have been working at Goodwin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Competitive compensation for attorneys, practice group leaders that actually care about associates being happy (may vary practice group to practice group - but mine is great), endless training opportunities, great benefits, very supportive of flexible work arrangements, very supportive of doing pro bono work, at the associate level at least if you're a jerk you end up being shown to the door.

    Cons

Like any firm, there are long hours, travel is often required. Like any firms, there can be internal politics that aren't always fair or logical.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about the people - they are what make the place great, and make clients want to use the firm.

I worked at Goodwin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

More organized than other firms as far as maintaining model documents that people can use to start off with when working on assignments. Great pay.

    Cons

Very snooty atmosphere where most of the the people up top went to some expensive law school like Boston College and still behave like their cliquey frat boy selves from 20 years ago. Very much like a good ol’ boys club where white male associates get their pick of work while more diverse employees (like women) get the scraps (like look for commas and periods and send mail) if there’s any left. At the end of the year...

    Advice to Management

Manage the organization so that people perform well and have diversity. Lawyers make so many mistakes in the work they do over there because you’re only measuring hours not quality (and the highest billers make the most mistakes but you sweep them under the rug). How can you possibly claim to guarantee the quality of your lawyers’ work when the experienced people up top are too high and mighty to interact with the people...

I have been working at Goodwin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent place to work. Combines perks of well-established law firm with start-up growth mentality of newer practice areas. Smart, kind people. The firm places a premium on collaboration and collegiality. It's not a hierarchical place as law firms go.

    Cons

The self-starter attitude isn't for everyone. People who can't be independent or aren't self-starters typically don't do as well here.

I worked at Goodwin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Partners are nice and not insane; you can actually have a life here. Their sick/maternity/ paternity policies are good - I wish I were still there

    Cons

Big law happens - you work till 3am & a week later someone mumbles to you about your billables Like anywhere in big law, pie eating contest

    Advice to Management

Give me feedback as we work together - not anonymously on the yearly form

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Goodwin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Smart, thoughtful, sociable colleagues; a broad client base and access to interesting work; lots of opportunity for growth and early responsibility.

    Cons

Stingy with small perks; lack of senior attorney oversight and workload management; short staffing of paralegals and case assistants; benefits are expensive.

    Advice to Management

Spend more money to retain talented staff. Shift spending so that employees feel the benefit, not just the partners. Technology needs to be aggressively updated. Less of an emphasis on face time and more recognition of quality and expertise would go a long way.
