I have been working at Goodwin Procter full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent place to work. Combines perks of well-established law firm with start-up growth mentality of newer practice areas. Smart, kind people. The firm places a premium on collaboration and collegiality. It's not a hierarchical place as law firms go.

    Cons

The self-starter attitude isn't for everyone. People who can't be independent or aren't self-starters typically don't do as well here.

I worked at Goodwin Procter full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Partners are nice and not insane; you can actually have a life here. Their sick/maternity/ paternity policies are good - I wish I were still there

    Cons

Big law happens - you work till 3am & a week later someone mumbles to you about your billables

Like anywhere in big law, pie eating contest

    Advice to Management

Give me feedback as we work together - not anonymously on the yearly form

I have been working at Goodwin Procter full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart, thoughtful, sociable colleagues; a broad client base and access to interesting work; lots of opportunity for growth and early responsibility.

    Cons

Stingy with small perks; lack of senior attorney oversight and workload management; short staffing of paralegals and case assistants; benefits are expensive.

    Advice to Management

Spend more money to retain talented staff. Shift spending so that employees feel the benefit, not just the partners. Technology needs to be aggressively updated. Less of an emphasis on face time and more recognition of quality and expertise would go a long way.

I worked at Goodwin Procter (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of perks, great hours, challenging work.

    Cons

It's all about the lawyers. Diversity, flex schedules, maternity benefits, etc. Don't expect to be included in diversity initiatives if you are one of the 750+ members of professional staff - attorneys' only.

    Advice to Management

Revenue producers do make the money but, haven't met a capable attorney yet who can run payroll, manage IT, recruit or balance the books. The firm is only as good as the whole organization.

I worked at Goodwin Procter full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very employee friendly. You work with smart people. They make a difference with their pro-bono work. Top tier firm.

    Cons

As they are a law firm, the wheels of change do not move very swiftly. Decisions can take a bit of time to get made. They are very prudent with their spending - which is both a positive and a negative.

    Advice to Management

Spend more on staff bonuses. The current structure does not incentivize staff in the least. Simplify the review process and give a section for the managers to provide a "what else you need to know about this year" discourse.
