I have been working at Goodwin full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Great company, good benefits. Friendly people (mostly). Lots of in-house training offered, so you can learn new skills or brush up on existing skills.

      Cons

Heavy workload, can be very fast paced (which I like but some might consider a "con"), minimal raises & bonuses for secretaries. Most secretaries here feel the review process is a joke.

      Advice to Management

Skip the useless seminars on things secretaries already know; streamline the review process, way too complicated, and doesn't have to be.

      Pros

Challenging work, great colleagues. Good benefits, including 18 weeks maternity leave. Supportive of pro bono work, and may extend the 150 hour limit in certain circumstances.

      Cons

No different from any other big law firm - you'll be staffed on large cases with 20+ attorneys and won't have much partner contact. They are also a bit secretive when it comes to layoffs - more than 10 associates were laid off as part of the annual review process in late 2014 prior to the larger layoff in April 2015. It was really 30+ litigation associates who were laid off in the last year.

      Pros

Great Culture Free food every other week Improvement in technology Good Benefits

      Cons

Pay is way below market Work assignments for paralegals is mediocre A lot of the attorneys are very lazy in performing simple tasks

      Advice to Management

Consider training attorneys to be computer literate. This is a major law firm, you should compensate your talent appropriately. There are a lot of good and talented people leaving the firm because they are not compensated well enough.

I have been working at Goodwin

        Pros

Good benefits, upper management makes an effort to get honest feedback, great people (for the most part)

        Cons

No work/life balance; the people take themselves very seriously; do not treat the admins and paralegals well.

I have been working at Goodwin

        Pros

Goodwin generally has good benefits and decent pay. The attorneys there are generally good people and are professional. There are hardly any difficult partners, although the heads of the groups tend to be tough on associates. Generally, a good place to start your legal career because Goodwin offers good training.

        Cons

Goodwin recently implemented a new pay system for associates named "banding." Instead of being paid by class year, associates will be in "bands" and the salary for each person will be different. Therefore, it will be really hard to determine how well you are getting paid compared to others in your group, as the ranges will probably not be disclosed. Goodwin is not known for being open about bonuses. Billable hour...

        Advice to Management

Management seems a bit out of touch with what concerns the associates. It seems that there is a power struggle between the "old guard" and the "newcomers." In some of the groups, the partners are fighting for power and even fight over associates. It is unclear where Goodwin is going.

        Pros

Good benefits; Autonomy; Friendly staff; Can build your skills if you take the initiative to do so on your own without assistance from management

        Cons

Little room for advancement; Non-competitive salaries; Heavy politics; High-turnover; No mentoring; Egos (more so in the Administrative Dept. than amongst the lawyers!); Understaffed; Manager are not qualified and drive out great talent across the firm; Low morale

        Advice to Management

Work on currently ineffective and poor, communication, management and leadership skills.
