I have been working at Google full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tangible outcome, c-level interaction, travel, fast changing environment, great brand to sell, learning opportunities, opportunities for internal projects and transfers

    Cons

Internal tools are far from perfection --> time lost on admin, big organization - big bureaucracy, in-work benefits go down due to cost cuts

    Advice to Management

    - Don't save money on employees events, make them big and top quality
    - Bring rotations program back

  2. "A bit overrated and very corporate/political"

I have been working at Google full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The obvious flashy perks are nice, but they're pretty standard at most tech companies these days. There are a lot of structured learning opportunities and a diversity of roles that you can transfer to. The people are generally friendly and very smart.

    Cons

Tends to be very political and many are not keen to help you unless it benefits them personally (i.e. performance reviews). Perks are nice, but I'd give them up for better basics - health, pension, etc.

Work flexibility is a farce - at least in my office/team - and there are a lot of barriers to even getting an afternoon approved to work from home, much less multiple days. To me this illustrates a lack of trust in their employees.

I don't know -- I've been generally unhappy since I've joined due to lowered work/life balance, lack of flexibility (so much for those extra vacation days), lack of colleagues' willingness to help with questions/projects, poorer basic benefits, etc.... but I've been compelled to stay since "it's Google" and to give it a fair chance.

    Advice to Management

Although many people would dream to work at Google, don't use your high demand to disregard those you already hired! There are many opportunities to improve basic employee well-being and long-term retention.

I worked at Google as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing offices and facilities, looks good on the resume.

    Cons

Clear divide between contract and permanent employees, no real insight into any kind of conversion or clear career path for those on contract. Was left until the final week of a contract before being informed it would be extended (several times). Full of talk of values such as work life balance but only applicable to a permanent employee who can push back and say no contractors dont have that luxury as they have a contract to be renewed

    Advice to Management

If contractors and full-time employees are to be treated the same then

I worked at Google full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits: financial package and the usual stuff
    Food: amazing and a lot
    Campus: superbly spacious
basically everything you got to see in the internship movie.

    Cons

    No work life balance
Management are completely disconnected from reality
Googliness is extremely overrated and undefinable
Too many distractions in the working space

    Advice to Management

You hire people for their skills and expertise, then own that responsibility to do what you preach. Don't expect them to deliver numbers and results if you're not going to make use of their skills and expertise.

I have been working at Google full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Job opportunities internal
    * Perks that take worries away (food, gym, insurance, doctors onsite, parental leave, annual leave)
    * Overall pretty smart people

    Cons

    * Snake pit in terms of internal politics and promotions
    * Business is growing so fast organic, individual impact unclear (=unsatisfying)
    * Almost nobody actually cares about the job they were hired for, mostly focused on getting promotions, visibility project, impressing management

    Advice to Management

Dive into the 'successes' and 'wins' of your sales people, 99% of the time they're actually just organic and no driven by good sales behaviours. People are spending their time on finding and writing success stories instead of actual working.

I worked at Google as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

None. Good for Cv if you can survive it.

    Cons

Tortureous. Very transactional environment and target focused, political snake pit full of snobs. Contract workers treated very differently to full timers, very high turn over particularly in recruitment coordination due to management. Food is over rated and gym is over crowded. Avoid avoid avoid.
