I worked at Google as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

While I was working at Google Maps as a contract worker there were some excellent benefits. I was traveling for my job and they provided a rental car and hotel (and I got to keep the rewards points) and I also got a per diem for food (started at $65 a day, was dropped to $50 a day later on). We also got free food anytime we were on the Google campus and got to take advantage of tons of great opportunities there.

    Cons

The program was very poorly run from the top down. There were only one or two people who actually worked at Google working on the project, and they were so far removed from the actual people doing the work that they didn't have a good sense of what the associates on the ground needed. Also, because it was a contract position, nobody could work for longer than two years. Even if you got promoted into a management position, you still had to leave after your two years was up. This caused a lot of issues with continuity, because people who knew what they were doing got phased out and were replaced by people who had to be trained fresh.

    Advice to Management

Some of the people who were promoted to management should have been hired on permanently. I understand using contract workers as a cost-saving initiative, but constant manager turnover is bad for the people working under them and therefore bad for the program. Show your workers that you care about them by keeping on the best ones and everyone will strive for that chance. Treat your employees as expendable and they will respond in kind.

I worked at Google full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Open, honest, collaborative, non-hierarchical culture. Google trusts its employees to do the right thing. TGIF town-hall is an awesome way to learn what others are working on at the company.

    Cons

Feels more and more like a big company. Manager quality is highly variable, and reorgs/manager changes are more frequent than not. I also got the impression that low-performers were moved around rather than fired.

I have been working at Google full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working at Google is being surrounded by wicked smart, highly motivated people. Things move at a very fast pace and the benefits are excellent.

    Cons

The things that make Google great are also what make it challenging. It is a tough corporate culture where only the strong survive.
