I have been working at Gordon Food Service full-time

    Pros

In MI it has good benefit comparable to other companies, particularly because it offers profit sharing to encourage longevity of employment. Home office is relatively new design with bright common area. Many employees are very loyal to the family and company especially those that have been at the company for a while.

If you are coming in as entry/low level, build relationships with the 15+ yr employees and willing to take your time 8-10 years to move up to a manager role then this is the place. It is an easy 40 hour week with lots of relationship (friendship) building time. Manager are not usually working managers, but people managers and it is important to be a cultural fit - spend time building relationships (friendships) it is more important than the work.

    Cons

The company/family values longevity however at time hires managers and above externally. If you are applying for one of those level positions, it will be difficult for you to be accepted. There is a large number of employees 20+ & 15+ years and they are the managers and above along with many of the non-manager employees. There is a "way it has always been done" mindset in many pockets but not all, consensus and everyone included in the decision is prevalent and expected. Many know each other inside and outside the office and mainly have a similar set of interests and backgrounds.

    Advice to Management

Opening up management roles to different thinkers and personal backgrounds will be beneficial in the long term for the company. Realize younger generations' high performers want to learn and grow from their managers and advance not just build relationships in and out of the office. Promote longevity based on real successful impact not just loyalty, strength and number of friends in the office. Offer rewards for those who can make positive impacts sooner than 6 years. You can learn and grow with high performing shorter - term employees.

I have been working at Gordon Food Service full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

In addition to the profit sharing, smart people, lovely office environment, annual "meeting" (celebration), excellent employee recognition, and great company vision and philosophy, you genuinely feel appreciated and valued on an individual level. Innovation and change are encouraged and not stifled as may be the case in more traditional corporate environments. There is a lot of opportunity to move around within the company if you'd like to do so, and leadership cares about your success. It is a great team to be a part of.

    Cons

The vacation package isn't as generous as some other companies, and it takes a significant number of years to see any marked increase in your allotted number of vacation days.

    Advice to Management

Consider improving the vacation accrual schedule so that employees get more vacation days per year more quickly. This will help retain and attract employees. When I was hired, it was really my only area of concern. The benefits package is very strong otherwise.

    Pros

Family owned company with good values. Moving in the right direction on offering employees more schedule flexibility and fun things like jean day Friday.

    Cons

Workload can be tough to manage with very little support. Departments are very lean and at times can be challenging to even take time off.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people. Many employees are stretched to the max creating an environment where you just have time to put out fires and little time to work on projects that will have long term benefit for company and customers.

    Pros

    - Incentive.
    - Work environment
    - Good people
    - Pay is alright
    -

    Cons

    - Everybody has 5+ yrs of experience leaving low seniority workers.. So it's hard to move up to a solid position.
    - Mandatory work days on your days off with no notice at all.
    - Too high of expectations for the pay, other warehouses demand less for the same pay.
    - Lots of safety rules that make no sense and decrease productivity.

    Advice to Management

Pay your workers a little more if you expect them to drop everything to come in on their day off.

I have been working at Gordon Food Service full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company is profitable and has a real culture of treating employees well. In my experience, managers care about their employees and see the core of managing to be serving their employees well.

    Cons

There have been a lot of organizations changes in the past year that have created some confusion about the company's direction. Technology solutions tend to be a bit outdated, and management isn't quick to embrace new technologies.

    Advice to Management

Continue to serve with caring and integrity. Be more open to innovation. Create paths for employees to try new things and be rewarded for it, regardless of the outcome.
