    Pros

Opportunities to move around in the company and learn different positions.

    Cons

    Pros

Good people who believe in what they do, company with a lot of heritage and national reach, entrepreneurial environment.. Great for aggressive personalities

    Cons

Little process, lean team leading to overwork, salary could be better. Small organization, so career growth is slow/limited.

    I worked at Gorton's full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a small/mid-size company where you really get to know your co-workers really well. I had the pleasure to become good friends at work with the managers. The company pays well and recognize your work. Paid time-off policy is amazing. There may be times when work load is quiet, but that's when you have the opportunity to learn things from different positions or even different departments. The company values in cross-training. Co-workers are very nice to each other.

    Cons

The only con that I can think of is growth opportunity. Because this is a small/mid-size company an entry level employee doesn't have much opportunity unless someone from higher-up retires or leaves the position/company.

    Advice to Management

Consider having an office in the West Coast or major cities to promote the business and achieve future goals.

    Pros

Work life balance and it is a small company so you'll end up knowing everyone that works there. Cape Ann is a very gorgeous area as well, even if Gloucester is a bit of a dump.

    Cons

Very poor people development from the bottom up and the company is very set in its ways. People that move up aren't necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed, but more likely the people who have the brownest noses. Middle-management always seemed to be focused on micro-managing every detail, and if you dare leave a moment before 4:30 (when most people leave), expect to get glares.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the talents of your employees and focus on developing them.

    Pros

Gorton's is very careful to only hire people who are a good fit for their department and since it is a great place to work people tend to stay for a long time. Personal growth is given high priority.

    Cons

Because it is a small company there are limited options for advancement at the senior level

    Advice to Management

Keep offering many options for employees

    I have been working at Gorton's full-time

    Pros

    The hours are good.
The pay and benefits are decent, or at least competitive.
You don't have to work too hard to stay employed.

    Cons

Lack of vision and strategy - there really is not one, and if they ever set one, they change it only months later.
Lack of business and marketing know-how or rigor ... leading to excuses about why performance is poor, weak "strategies", and business declines.
Employees do not try to improve themselves or the business, the company seems stuck in a rut, people just show up to collect a paycheck. Over time, they have been beaten down by management that new ideas and sticking your neck out are not appreciated and can even backfire. So people end up doing the bare minimum and playing politics instead.
Top management is not transparent and does not seem to hold themselves accountable for poor business performance. They also do not communicate well with each other, and often times bad-talk each other at an unprofessional level.
Zero training. The only thing you learn on the job is how Gorton's has been doing things forever - if anyone even attempts to try to teach you something - which is usually not the right way or up to par with the rest of the industry. And then management does not give employees job assignments to stretch themselves and learn something new; rather, they put them in their little box of what they came in knowing and are good at doing, and that's it.
Lack of upward mobility. They do not like promoting people.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how you could be better - bring in experienced and good people from the outside and actually listen to their ideas. Then set a clear vision and strategy. Stick to it for at least a year. Execute it well. Give clear and high standards to your teams, and then ownership to do the work. And lastly, hold your teams accountable, and even more importantly, yourselves too.
