  1. "Now out of business"

I worked at Gospel Light full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A Christian publisher with a great mission, it was overall a great place to work.

    Cons

The business model could not sustain itself.

    Advice to Management

I know that the last team tried to make a go of it. Long story short: everything has its season and God IS in control, even when companies go out of business. Thankfully, the curriculum materials are still for sale through other publishers.

I worked at Gospel Light full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people who work for Gospel Light have a heart for the company mission and are dedicated and skilled employees.

    Cons

Over time, a combination of circumstances decimated the upper-managements ability to lead effectively. One problem was that the Christian Publishing industry always had is a low profit margins. As competition grew, the product became more of a commodity and less profitable, especially in California. This was a family-run business, and the family had different ideas on how to rise to these challenges. Nobody was on the same page, which resulted in the demise of this now out-of-business company.

    Advice to Management

A better succession plan, governed by a more independent chair, with a wider range of ages and experiences may have helped extended the life of the company.

    Pros

Loved the mission, the heritage, and the staff.

    Cons

The owners and the senior management did not live out what they said were their Christian values.

    Advice to Management

Stop lying. Become humble. Take responsibility for destroying the witness and testimony of Gospel Light. Repent.

I worked at Gospel Light full-time

    Pros

    - Opportunity to work in an environment where faith is celebrated
    - Sense of contributing to something positive
    - Dedicated workers
    - Great location

    Cons

    - Inability to listen to feedback of employees; employee morale declined over the years because of top-heavy hiring, lack of transparency, outright disregard for employee concerns, inability to retain talented staff, etc. etc. etc.
    - Unwillingness to adapt to changing culture/times

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees - they were hired for a reason. Allow people to work toward their strengths instead of punctuating weaknesses. Allow innovative ideas to flourish. Show employees that they are valued - this used to happen at GL all the time, and then company culture changed. It's unfortunate that GL is closing, but this probably could have been prevented had the company been able to have clear and open communication and been willing to support ideas that would have allowed the company to adapt to the changing times.

    Pros

The other employees are great to work with. It is a very mission driven company. If you subscribe to the mission of the company, it makes the usual work place annoyances not so hard to deal with.

    Cons

The management needs to change its perspective. Instead of feeling entitled, they need to honor employees for the work that they do. They also need to take seriously customer feed back.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Listen to your customers. Don't assume that you have nothing to learn. Invest as much in digital resources as you do in traditional print media.
