    Negative Outlook

I worked at Government Legal Department full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Up to 2 days a week working from home. Potential to transfer to variety of work. Favoured paralegals allowed to qualify with Cilex.

    Cons

Promotion depends on brownnosing bosses. Bullying rife. Sex pests kept on even after litigation. Paralegals being replaced with solicitors to protect SCS team leader jobs so they can redeploy to enquiries. If given corporate work for your CV that is used against you as you won't have enough chargeables. Not unknown for managers to doctor documents to manage out staff. Redundancies do not always attract redundancy pay...

    Advice to Management

Resign before it becomes impossible to attract or keep decent paralegals. Train new management in HR. Heed staff survey results on bullying culture.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Government Legal Department full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Interesting work, great colleagues, really good work life balance, flexible working arrangements available, the good managers are really good.

    Cons

Low pay, no knowledge management system, very little administrative support, lawyers expected to do administrative tasks to support the organisation in order to qualify for promotion, significant variety between different departments - some v professional and high standard, some v unprofessional and lower quality work, bad managers can be really bad - luck of the draw.

    Advice to Management

Invest in support staff, KM system, pay people more.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Government Legal Department full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Civil Service benefits Interesting work only if management agrees

    Cons

Dictatorial Management No encouragement or support to progress even if you have loads of potential. Work arrangements such as working from home, part-time or compressed hours can be changed by management or as a result of workload pressures. This happens all the time. Work politics Grading system means that higher grades can mistreat you. You cannot challenge higher grades inappropriate and unreasonable behaviour...

    Advice to Management

Management needs regular training on how to treat people fairly and appropriately in accordance with civil service values. GLD should promote and reward talent and hard work from lower grades.

      Negative Outlook

I have been working at Government Legal Department full-time

      Pros

interesting work and generally a good work life balance

      Cons

Salary is poor. no substantive pay rises since 2008/2009. Pay increase of 1% in a good year is less than the rate of inflation.

      Advice to Management

increase salaries otherwise talented lawyers will either leave or be less motivated to put in significant discretionary effort.

I have been working at Government Legal Department part-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

You are encouraged to move department every few years so it never gets dull. Great flexibility - part time, part year, compressed hours, etc, and good maternity / paternity packages. Great colleagues. Really interesting work at heart of government

      Cons

Salary not comparable to private sector. Sometimes overly bureaucratic. Political side can be frustrating eg change of government, reshuffles.
