    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Government Legal Department full-time

    Pros

interesting work and generally a good work life balance

    Cons

Salary is poor. no substantive pay rises since 2008/2009. Pay increase of 1% in a good year is less than the rate of inflation.

    Advice to Management

increase salaries otherwise talented lawyers will either leave or be less motivated to put in significant discretionary effort.

I have been working at Government Legal Department part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You are encouraged to move department every few years so it never gets dull. Great flexibility - part time, part year, compressed hours, etc, and good maternity / paternity packages. Great colleagues. Really interesting work at heart of government

    Cons

Salary not comparable to private sector. Sometimes overly bureaucratic. Political side can be frustrating eg change of government, reshuffles.

I have been working at Government Legal Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very interesting work in almost every corner of the organisation. Great opportunities for lateral moves across Government. Collegial, kind, engaged colleagues. Diverse workforce and good and improving representation of women in leadership positions. Good for flexible working, and excellent annual leave and sickness benefits,

    Cons

Since 2009, three years of frozen salaries followed by 1% capped increases each year since have meant a large real terms decrease in pay, and hours have increased. A long term career in GLD may not be affordable unless you already have money or a well paid partner.

    Advice to Management

Ensure staff aren't working beyond conditioned hours. Increase opportunities for secondments to higher-paid roles. New staff have been put on worse terms, working longer hours, which is bad for morale - put them on the standard terms

I have been working at Government Legal Department full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The variety of work in the advisory positions is amazing. Great exposure to high level work at an early stage of your career. Great colleagues.

    Cons

Ministers can change their minds on policy making lots of wasted work. You have to hot desk as not enough desks and the IT hardware is like something from 1995.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in IT and desks.
