I have been working at Government of Alberta full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Fantastic people to work with. Able to make a difference for Albertans. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

No trust from executive and central services to any operational units. Micromanagement and control is killing innovation and motivation. Executive turnover and movement leads to little continuity or faith in leadership.

I worked at Government of Alberta full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

There are so many opportunities to gain experience because you can learn a variety of subject matter, move into other roles, and find jobs in other ministries. Not many other jobs allow you to stay employed yet take on totally new roles. For example, transition from serving the public to helping on the climate change file.

    Cons

Historically, employees moving into management have a great deal of technical competency, but aren't taught how to manage teams... many lack the behavioural competency to lead humans. It's said to be one employer, but there isn't one central recruitment process. Instead the ministry staff seeking to fill the position gets to determine who gets hired..... and I've experienced not getting AN INTERVIEW because his/her friend got the job.

I have been working at Government of Alberta full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Opportunity as jobs are plentiful. Compensation compared to other provinces is very good.

    Cons

Very tactical focus. Business plans fail based on the politics of the day.
