I have been working at Government of Canada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This is a very team oriented environment with opportunity for collaboration, growth and new learning experiences.

    Cons

It is based on term work and a lengthy process to be a permanent member of the public service. For many positions fluency of both official languages is required.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Government of Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Steady employment, hard to get fired. Great people to work with (70%)

    Cons

No innovation, people who should be fired get promoted. Ever wonder why your tax money is poorly spent? It is not the politicians. It is my coworkers. Also not getting paid sucks.

    Advice to Management

Change the assessment so people can be let go. Rebuild the company at the bottom. Make a company where innovation is rewarded. Have accountability for resourses. Drop the culture of bilingual but not qualified getting the job and then people looking dumbfounded when. Department collapses.

I have been working at Government of Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great benefits, union represented, pay equity, good work-life balance, paid overtime, opportunity for career advancement, flexible work hours.

    Cons

Hard to think of any. If you work hard you can get ahead. Lots of opportunities to shine if you are a good worker. The need to be bilingual can be career limiting.

    Advice to Management

Remove the need for mandatory bilingualism. It is not necessary and can be career limiting to people who did not grow up in a bilingual school system.

    Pros

Balanced workload Excellent place to learn new skills Competitive wages A fair employer Opportunities to become bilingual Superb benefits High job security

    Cons

Decision-making is not as fast paced as in the private sector Unfortunately not the first choice for top graduates partially because majority of the federal government is in the capital city

I have been working at Government of Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great work environment, benefits package, entrenched values and ethics, training programs, and exciting to be a part of providing services to Canadians.

    Cons

Poor public perception, based on a stereotype of the old civil service. Makes it difficult to discuss work outside of public service core, without drawing critics. Probably the biggest barrier.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the public more. Provide services with leaner, more effective management. Look forward in terms of communication with the public...ie better access...better Web...better push communication. Become a member of the community.
