I have been working at Government of Canada full-time

    Pros

    Union, OK pay and benefits

    Cons

Huge Boy's Club. Favoritism like I've never seen before. If you aren't the type to kiss up, you better be satisfied with sitting in a corner and watching those that do get the perks. Poor Management and HR for sure...

    Advice to Management

    Quit

I worked at Government of Canada (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Was lured to join. Did so against my better judgement. No pros that I can think of.

    Cons

My career was stunted. Was discriminated, marginalized, harassed and bullied. My skills, education and talent were never utilized. Broken promises all around by management.

    Pros

Most of co-workers are friendly and helpful. A lot of trainings provided. Reasonably good and safe work environment. New IT equipment provided on a regular basis (every two-three years).

    Cons

All rules and corporate behaviour determined not by guidelines but by managers. Very subjective approach. Changes are unpredictable. Morale climate is very low.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Great people, various projects, and that's it!

    Cons

Stifling creativity, too slow to respond to changes in technology, poor leadership, lead by example.

    Advice to Management

Be a leader, mentor your people to achieve success, do not only look at the budget as a way to build teams.

I worked at Government of Canada as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Spacious offices, good salary, benefits, more life than work, lots of socializing in the atrium.

    Cons

    - Little chance for moving up the ranks if you enter at the lower levels
    - Favouritism for professional development and training (the French outnumber here in terms of opportunities)
    - Older staff members take credit for the work of the younger ones

    Advice to Management

Take performance management and measurement seriously. It is obvious to all that career mobility depends on how you look rather than what you can do.

I worked at Government of Canada full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Other than a paycheque there is no good reason to work there.

    Cons

Highly stressful environment. Management bullies employees. Employees routinely use immoral methods to track down and harass general public until they provide census information.

    Advice to Management

There is an unscrupulous culture in Statistics Canada's Census management. What a disgrace to Canada.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Government of Canada (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits ...way better than most of the private sector .. flex hours and work from home policies so you can do whatever you want whenever you want and still get paid.( i.e fight your way through COSTCO with hundreds of other public servants during the work day) Almost impossible to get fired once you're in. Unbelievable pension!

    Cons

New core competency requirements that public servants need to show integrity and respect, think things through, work effectively with others and take initiative and be action-oriented are totally outrageous! Thank goodness the unions are taking the Government to court to fight these requirements!
