    Pros

Good teammates, solid learning experience, get to meet people from all over Canada, great work life balance, easy-going culture in most departments

    Cons

have to learn and use two languages for everything, a ton of red tape to get anything done, limited focus on creativity, very bureaucratic and political, little value-added

    Advice to Management

lose control, be more open to divesting responsibilities, be more open to hiring the best, relax language requirements, find ways to dismantle the union (really cutting down on motivation)

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Humane and flexible, allowed to work from home, my manager doesn't micromanage (obviously this is different from manager to manager)

    Cons

Few opportunities to move up; management does not seem to care that people are unhappy, attitude seems to be that everyone is replaceable (because everyone wants to get into government)

    Advice to Management

    Appreciate your employees

I worked at Government of Canada as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is excellent considering the level of work/life balance. Incredible job security. It's near impossible to be fired when you get intermediate status. In the right team, your work will have tremendous impact on the lives of Canadians.

    Cons

Horrible corporate culture. Lack of innovation. Bureaucratic nightmare. In certain offices, success is more about looking busy than actually getting anything done.

    Advice to Management

Think critically about how to encourage new grads to work in government when many lucrative and rewarding private-sector opportunities are snatching top talent away.
