I have been working at Government of Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

People are wonderful and care about what they do. If you have kids or family, the benefits are great, if you are single, without kids, you basically get the short end of the stick stuck working more (to cover those that take time off to take family to doctor's appt etc) and are stuck working over the najor holidays. Salary and work/life balance for junior level employees are excellent. Mid to senior level are in line with the private sector. Opportunities to attend training courses (depending on the department's budget) is made available to employees. Travel is minimal at all levels. If you are employed in Ottawa vs. the rest of Canada, you generally get paid at a classification higher then regional counterparts, and have less work to do.

    Cons

The 2014 Public Service Employment Survey identified a number of serious issues public servants felt needed to be addressed: 1. Employee Harassment; 2. Modernization (technology); 3. Retraining, retention and hiring to replace baby boomers. Other issues raised are appointments of individuals that are not qualified for positions (nepotism, and abuse of authority by management when hiring); the Ottawa vs. Region disparity (work outside Ottawa is seen as less complex and important the that carried out in Ottawa.

I have been working at Government of Canada

    Pros

There are so many departments you can choose to work for. Once you're indeterminate the job security and benefits are great.

    Cons

Staffing processes take forever. You must work with very old technology and there's a lot of red tape.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade technology. Streamline approval processes. Deal with bad employees instead of ignoring them and hoping they'll go away.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Government of Canada full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great benefits If you are fortunate enough to have influence and be taken seriously, you can positively help citizens of Canada

    Cons

Leadership. Management at the most senior levels is most concerned about protecting themselves rather than working toward the greater good and supporting their staff to do great work. Micromanagement Too many silos, poor communication across organization Not enough investment in mentorship and professional development Lack of support for creative and critical thinking Not enough resources to support staff (more work than people)

    Pros

Great benefits, good pay, interesting work, pension, very secure and stable. Fair salaries and great time off and leave opportunities. Many opportunities for training and development.

    Cons

Bureaucracy, hierarchy, slow moving, sometimes unclear strategic direction and no one is held accountable for mistakes. Can be frustrating for people who want to be innovative.

    Advice to Management

Give more clear strategic direction and hold people more accountable for mistakes and failures. Allow for more innovation and development.
