Great environment. The staff is very encouraging and the students make it fun to come to work. Very hard working staff, faculty and administrators. Everyone is supportive of the work done by others.

    Cons

Little room for advancement. Budget issues affect employee morale.

    Advice to Management

Great progress in a few short years. Don't forget to appreciate your employees.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Governors State University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Good benefits [that may be reduced soon]
    - Student first mentality
    - President and VP have really helped grow the university
    - Campus
    - Hardworking staff
    - No matter the budget crisis this University will stay open and serve its students well

    Cons

    - Some managerial bullying/intimidation
    - Adhere's to the 'i want it done now' mentality that is so prevalent in today's society. Problem with this is most if not all departments are laughably understaffed and no-one seems to understand this.
    - Talented staff lost due to budget crisis in IL - no plans to re-employ positions but rather make do but still get the same work done.
    - Faculty appears to know how to do everyone elses job instead of focusing on theirs
    - Budget crisis - lack of job certainty

    Advice to Management

    - Look at faculty/staff that have taken lower positions that are costing the university 100K a piece - former Pres., Deans etc. If you are looking to make smart financial decisions cut positions / salaries from people not really earning the kind of money they are being paid. Do this instead of trying to nickel/dime savings and/or cut the real workers
    - Lower output expectations considering the budgetary situation
    - Support employees - morale is suffering
    - More advocacy needed for University in Springfield
    - Hold students more accountable

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Governors State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice people with a family atmospher feel.

    Cons

Low pay and lack of state budget.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within the departments. There are knowledgable, educated people right in front of you that never get a chance to shine.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Governors State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great higher education institution to work for. Coworkers and professors were nice and elevated you to a higher level.

    Cons

Salary was a little low, but it's to be expected with state funding being a large factor.

    Pros

Great people to work with, tuition reimbursement, good benefits.

    Cons

Low pay, a lot of micromanaging.

    Advice to Management

Stop outsourcing when hiring. Give current employees a chance to advance in their careers. Also, wages need to be livable.

I have been working at Governors State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Laid back environment, people are friendly, tuition reimbursement opportunities.

    Cons

Pay is much lower than other Universities pay scale for comparable positions. No yearly raise for Civil Service positions, while other bargaining positions get a yearly raise. No room for growth opportunities outside of Civil Service positions.

    Advice to Management

Civil Service positions pay should be comparable to what other institutions pay and should be a livable wage.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Governors State University (Less than a year)

    Pros

Close to home; tuition reimbursement; good medical benefits; good managers; great way to obtain your degree, from a bachelors degree to Phd at a reduced cost; free parking; good comaraderie among workers; onsite cafeteria.

    Cons

Pay not very good; cafeteria rather expensive; it is a civil service state university, which means you have to take a test for most available positions. This has its good and bad side.

    Advice to Management

The President of the University and her team is the reason that GSU is still open and has a lot more respect from the students, faculty, staff and the community. She's worked diligently to ensure that the students' education is not interrupted. I applaud her.

I worked at Governors State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy job (if you know your subject matter). When students don't show up its a good time to do your own homework and get paid. Low stress levels, Other employees including your supervisors are laid back for the most part. You have access to help in subjects YOU might need help in.

    Cons

Low pay, minimal hours, and a tendency for the bosses to try to use you for subjects you don't know anything about (EG: tried using me to tutor finance when I was in the Intro level classes myself).

    Advice to Management

None really. Overall good experience. Maybe more hours for the tutors or higher pay.
