I have been working at Gowan Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Gowan is profitable and they do have a generous bonus program that can significantly top off your (low) salary.

    Cons

Old products with regulatory baggage are under pressure. Senior management is largely oblivions who barely know their job, much less the industry. If you are in with the family, life is wonderful. If not, eat your dirt and shut up.

    Advice to Management

    Bring in non-family professional management.

I worked at Gowan Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly Coworkers. Relaxed Atmosphere.

    Cons

Gowan is attempting to be a "grown up" competitor in the Chemical business. It can get there but will need to change it's goofy HR policies and family quirkiness. Specific example is not giving raises to people promoted until they "prove' themselves in their new role for a year. Any new ideas or conversations that employees bring that threaten these cultural oddities are immediately shunned by their socially awkward CEO.
Another extremely bad habit is demonstrated by much of upper management who use foul language and belligerent tones when addressing subordinates.

    Advice to Management

Obviously immediate change is warranted, and veteran managers need to do what right instead of what is easy.

I worked at Gowan Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They are present in many countries which gives you a lot of exposure to international business.
    Very relaxed and casual atmosphere.
Projects can move on a timely manner.

    Cons

Unpopular city, Yuma is definitely not for everyone.
Low pay. Very high employee rotation.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your good employees more by paying them more in order to retain them. You got to understand that as global as you have become, you need to retain talent to grow even further.

"Quite possibly the worst company I've ever worked for."

    Pros

Decent pay and overtime; whether you want it or not.

    Cons

Very disgruntled employees- and who can blame them. They often work under-staffed- which results in unreasonable work load, excessive hours, and treated poorly; especially if you don't speak their language/fit in to their hostile culture. There is quite a lot of nepotism, cronyism, backbiting/in-fighting, incredibly high turnover, poor training- if any, poor management style, and dangerous work environment.

    Advice to Management

    Do something about it.

I have been working at Gowan Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Gowan is a human company, if that makes sense, and the owners care about the people who work there. A great deal more flexibility and accommodation is granted than at your average large company. Gowan has never had a broad force reduction in its history, and has paid a bonus every year except for one. All employees who completed a full year, from janitor to general manager, get the same percentage of their salary as a bonus, as long as the quality of their work makes them eligible for one.

    Cons

There are a few inept managers working for Gowan, who are a bit teflon. There's also an element of family favorites getting special treatment. Gowan is a very flat organization, with few levels of management, so it's definitely not a place where you get promoted every 6 months.

    Advice to Management

For the most part, the small company feel and sensibilities are worth maintaining, even as the company grows rapidly. Limit the perceived favoritism for friends of family members.

I have been working at Gowan Company (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Very casual atmosphere
    Freedom to fail
    Nice 401K limited match

    Cons

Extreme cronyism in hiring practices and promotions
Chaotic environment, lack of direction or clear mission.
Non-competitive salary below average benefit package
    Information hoarding leadership
High turnover rate in most departments
Nice training ground for "high potential" employees but can't retain them.
    Understaffed with skilled competent employees

    Advice to Management

Management is a major part of the problem. Hire managers with people skills and let them manage people. Don't assign them 5 additional jobs and attempt to manage people on the side.

    Pros

Overtime (forced). Pay rate. Benefits. Flexible schedule IF you say you have kids or your friends with or related to Boss

    Cons

Lab: Blatant Nepotism, Cronyism existed. Preferential treatment given to family, friends of Boss. Unorganized department. No structured training or health/safety monitoring. Continuous HIGH turn overs created understaffing, insane amounts of forced OT, techs had to train new employees while dealing with unreasonable production demands and pressures, not taking lunch and breaks (16+ hour shifts), jeopardized personal health and safety because of rushing to get backlogged duties, toxic relationship among employees. Could not communicate concerns for fear of retaliation and indifference from Boss.

    Advice to Management

HR: Get CONFIDENTIAL feedback from each Lab Tech with written promise of no retaliation. Act upon concerns.
